Abduction attempt of Journalist Weam Al-Sofy’s son following online smear campaigns against Weaam Alsofy is proof that online harassment has severe offline consequences. The Coalition For Women In Journalism is deeply concerned about the status of women journalists in Yemen amid this heated conflict in the severely polarized country. Journalist Weam was targeted by threats of assassination and physical attacks over her coverage for the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Taez. Following her coverage exposing the misery of Yemeni citizens, leaders and politically affiliated figures with the Al-Houthi group threatened the journalist and her family.

Journalist Basma Mostafa released on a 2000 L.E bail approximately 100 $. The Coalition For Women In Journalism welcomes the release and urges the Egyptian authorities to take further steps to liberate free press by releasing journalists and revoking barriers to free press.

طهران، إيران، 24 أغسطس،2020—تم القبض علي الصحفية السابقة وناشطة حقوق الإنسان ندا صابوري من قبل ممثلين للمدعي العام بطهران في السابع من أغسطس وتم إيداعها في سجن إيفن لتقضي فترة عقوبة 3 أعوام ونصف. وقد تم اتهام ندا بالتجمهر والتأمر والتظاهر ضد أوضاع السجناء في سجن إيفين في طهران عام 2014.

Nada Sabouri, a former journalist and civil society activist was arrested by representatives of the Tehran prosecutor’s office on 7 August and was taken to Evin prison to serve a sentence of three and a half years in prison. Nada is being charged with “assembly and collusion” for protesting the prison conditions in Evin Prison of Tehran in 2014.

Journalist Basma Mostafa was abducted and later detained for covering the murder of a citizen in the Luxor Governorate at the hands of a national security officer. The Supreme National Security court decided to put Basama in 15 days pre-trial detention over her journalistic activities. The Coalition For Women In Journalism is enraged by such actions of the Egyptian authorities against journalists and press freedom and we call for the immediate release of Basma.
