Journalist Esraa Abdel-Fattah as of today has spent one year in pre-trial detention pending case no. 488\2019. Justice is absent from Egypt by the use of arbitrary pretrial detention. The Coalition For Women In Journalism salutes Esraa’s persistence and the path in which she always defended freedom of expression and we call upon the Egyptian authorities to end her deplorable bidding for justice.

The Coalition For Women In Journalism is appalled by yet another serious breach of press freedom. On October 4, 16 journalists were detained in Belarus, seven of them being women. While four of the detained journalists who were impeded at work were released after verification of their documents at police stations; three of them still remain under custody and are awaiting trial.

Journalist Basma Mostafa was abducted and later detained for covering the murder of a citizen in the Luxor Governorate at the hands of a national security officer. The Supreme National Security court decided to put Basama in 15 days pre-trial detention over her journalistic activities. The Coalition For Women In Journalism is enraged by such actions of the Egyptian authorities against journalists and press freedom and we call for the immediate release of Basma.

Kars Belediyesi Eş Başkanı Ayhan Bilgen'in 25 Eylül'de düzenlenen Kobane operasyonu kapsamında gözaltına alınmasının ardından, bu sabah Kars'ta yeni bir gözaltı operasyonu başlatıldı. Operasyon kapsamında pek çok siyasetçi ve sivil toplum kuruluşu temsilcisi gözaltına alınırken Demokrat Haber muhabiri gazeteci Selda Manduz da gözaltına alınanların arasında yer aldı.

After Kars Municipality Co-Mayor Ayhan Bilgen was detained as part of the Kobane operation on September 25, a new detention operation was launched in Kars this morning. While many politicians and representatives of non-governmental organizations were detained within the scope of the operation, Democrat News reporter Selda Manduz was also among those detained.

After a week of enforced disappearance, journalist Naglaa Mohamed of Daarb news website appeared in the supreme national security Prosecution office. The Coalition For Women In Journalism is appalled by the constant aggression towards women journalists and press freedom in Egypt.

Supreme National Security Prosecution Office renewed journalist Shaimaa Samy’s pre-trial detention period again. The Coalition For Women In Journalism is noting the severeness and absence of fair trial guarantees in Egypt. Pre-trial detention became a pillar of injustice in Egypt.

With ongoing protests sparked after the allegedly false victory announcement of Alexander Lukashenko who has been ruling the country for an iron fist for 26 years, on Sunday, demonstrators marched to the presidential palace to “celebrate” Lukashenko’s 66th birthday.

The Coalition For Women In Journalism is once again dismayed at the way Chinese government and authorities silence the press. Cheng Lei, a prominent anchor on state-owned English news channel China Global Television Network (CGTN) was detained on August 14 with no warrant or legal reason.

In the 20 days since the disputed presidential elections, Belarus has presented anything but ideal working conditions for journalists. Following the allegedly falsified election results which put “Europe’s last dictator” Alexander Lukashenko back to power, Belarus has begun to tighten its grip on journalists. Belarusian Association of Journalists documented over 100 cases of detention of journalists since August 9th. Detained journalists were kept in horrifying conditions, raising concern globally. The journalists were also beaten and some were deliberately targeted with rubber bullets.

Belarus has been grabbing the world’s attention in a notorious way for the past month as citizens rejected the suspicious election results and took to the streets. The country has been on the headlines for torture and mistreatment of protestors, including journalists.
