Indigenous journalist Starla Myers was arrested on September 16 by Ontario Provincial Police over her coverage of protests of land defenders in the 1492 Land Back Lane action reclaiming land along the Haldimand Tract.

Gazeteci Hülya Kılınç’ın Libya’da ölen bir MİT mensubunun cenazesini haberleştirmesi üzerine açılan davada karar duruşması bugün görüldü. Hülya Kılınç “Devletin güvenliği veya iç veya dış siyasal yararları bakımından niteliği itibarıyla gizli kalması gereken bilgileri açıkladığı” suçlaması ile son altı aydır cezaevindeydi. Davanın bugün görülen duruşmasında gazeteci TCK 329 yönünden beraat etti ancak hakkında “Millî İstihbarat Teşkilatının görev ve faaliyetlerine ilişkin bilgi ve belgeleri basın ve medya yoluyla yayımlamak” suçuyla 3 yıl 9 ay hapis cezasına hükmedildi. Gazetecinin cezaevinde geçirdiği süre göz önüne alınarak tahliyesine karar verildi.

The verdict hearing in the lawsuit filed against journalist Hülya Kılınç for her report on the death of a MİT (National Intelligence Agency) officer in Libya was held today. Hülya Kılınç has been in prison for the past six months and is charged with "disclosing information that should remain confidential due to the nature of the security of the state or domestic or foreign political benefits". At the hearing held today, the journalist was acquitted in terms of TCK 329, but was sentenced to 3 years and 9 months in prison for "publishing information and documents regarding the duties and activities of the National Intelligence Organization through the press and media". Considering the time spent in prison, the journalist was released.

Journalist Kowsar Karimi from Mehr News Agency was arrested last week while covering the news of demolition of homes in the village of Abolfazl for a construction project for residential homes. Kowsar was the first journalist to report the devastating demolition when she was taken by the police to be interrogated over her news coverage. She was later released on bail but the legal proceedings against the journalist are standing and she is facing trial over charges of “propaganda against the state”.

Zhang Zhan, a citizen journalist based in Shanghai, has been arrested after initially being detained for her coronavirus reporting. She has been held by the police in the municipality’s Pudong district on “public disturbance charges”.
