Iran: CFWIJ Denounces The Legal Persecution Against Journalist Sepideh Qoliyan

The General Directorate of Prisons in Bushehr filed a criminal complaint against journalist and political prisoner Sepideh Qoliyan, who is on leave from prison. The journalist revealed the inhumane prison conditions and the harassment against women prisoners in Bushehr Prison. Sepideh was charged with "publishing lies online" and "spreading propaganda against the regime" after her posts about the prison on social media. Turkey: CFWIJ Demands Journalist Çiğdem Toker’s Acquittal Immediately

The sixth hearing of the trial against Sözcü columnist Çiğdem Toker was held in İstanbul today. was postponed to a further date due to the judge’s administrative leave. Çiğdem is on trial with a claim of 80,000 TL for moral compensation. The court adjourned the next hearing until February 1, 2022, ruling to hear witnesses statements. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) condemns the policies of intimidation against journalists. Journalists report only the truth. Defamation cases are unacceptable with unrealistic amounts. We demand the court to dismiss all charges against the journalist and acquit Çiğdem immediately. Journalism is not a crime.

Canada: CFWIJ Condemns The Sexist Online Attacks Against Journalist Christy Somos

Journalist Christy Somos received vile emails after politician Maxime Bernier tweeted out her email addresses alongside several of her colleagues. Displeased by their coverage of his work, and their line of inquiry, Bernier encouraged his supporters to “play dirty”, thus initiating a violent targeted harassment campaign against the journalists. Although later taken down, the journalists faced hostile digital attacks as a result of his statement.

The Taliban has released a new media mandate for the country listed in 11 clauses. The stipulations are vague and precariously open to interpretation, posing further risk to the media. Bulgaria: CFWIJ Condemns The Violence Against Polina Paunova and Genka Shikerova At The Ruling Party Conference

Polina Paunova and Genka Shikerova, journalists for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty were physically attacked and verbally abused while covering a conference arranged by the ruling party, GERB. Masked men approached Polina when she tried to film them clashing with protestors present on location and physically assaulted her. The incident was caught on tape by her colleague Genka Shikerova, who claims that no one came to assist the two journalists.

Lebanon: Reporter Layal Saad Denied Entry to The Presidential Palace. CFWIJ Condems The Incident

Reporter for Al Jadeed TV, Layal Saad was denied entry to Baabda Presidential Palace. The reporter was on location to cover a cabinet meeting, however, was restricted from attending the session due to an incident that took place during a previous visit. Last month, Layal was abused by a security guard for not referring to President Aoun with his complete title. The security believed she had disrespected the president in the way she spoke about him to a colleague.

Gazeteci Durket Süren hakkında “örgüt üyeliği”, “örgüte bilerek ve isteyerek yardım” ve “örgüt propagandası yapmak” suçlamalarıyla açılan davanın yedinci duruşması Diyarbakır’da görüldü. Mahkeme geçen duruşmada olduğu gibi gazeteci Süren’in el konulan telefon ve bilgisayarına ait dijital inceleme sonucunun beklemesyekarar verdi. Bir sonraki duruşma 13 Aralık 2021’de görülecek. Gazetecilikte Kadın Koalisyonu (CFWIJ) olarak çeşitli gerekçelerle ertelenen davaların gazetecileri sindirme amacıyla yapıldığına inanıyoruz. Tekrar söylüyoruz, gazetecilik suç değildir. Gazetecilerin haber takip etme ve yapma hakkı ihlal edildi. Gazetecilikte Kadın Koalisyonu (CFWIJ), Türkiye’de gazetecilere yönelik artan baskıları endişeyle takip ediyor. Türk yetkililerden basın ve ifade özgürlüğü kriterlerini dikkate alarak gazetecilerin mesleklerini icra etmelerine izin vermelerini talep ediyoruz.
