Belarus: Mass Police Raid In An Escalation Of The Crackdown Against Journalists
Police raided the homes of at least 15 journalists, six of whom were women. The journalists’ laptops, phones and equipment were also confiscated. Continuing crackdown against independent news outlets in Belarus is sharply escalating. A new wave of mass raids jeopardizes the lives of journalists. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) closely monitors the incidents in the country. We urge Lukashenko’s administration to end the oppression against journalists.
Cuba: CFWIJ Demands Cubanet Journalist Camila Acosta’s Release Immediately
CubaNet journalist Camila Acosta will be prosecuted for crimes against State Security, according to the screenwriter Ángel Santiesteban confirmed on July 12. The journalist remains in custody following the demonstrations she covered on July 11. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) is utterly dismayed by these crackdowns against journalists in the country. We demand Cuban authorities release Camila immediately.

A prominent Iranian human rights activist and journalist living in New York, Masih Alinejad was the target of an international kidnapping attempt.

Turkey: Trial Of Journalists Semiha Şahin And Pınar Gayıp Adjourned For The 14th Time – Journalists Must Be Acquitted Immediately
The trial in which Etkin News Agency (ETHA) editor Semiha Şahin and reporter Pınar Gayip have tried charges of "being affiliated with a terrorist organisation" and "spreading propaganda" was postponed for the 14th time. The court adjourned the next hearing to November 9, 2021, ruling that the missing elements should be eliminated. The Coalition for Women in Journalism (CFWIJ) condemns the case against journalists, which was postponed on various excuses. Pınar and Semiha are journalists and journalism cannot be prosecuted. We demand their immediate acquittal.

Venezuela: CFWIJ Condemns Security Forces To Attempt To Intimidate Journalist Mildred Manrique
Mildred Manrique, 800 Noticias’ journalist, affirmed that security forces attempted to search her house without having a prior notice or a search warrant. The journalist also included that the police officers were carrying long weapons. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) condemns Venezuelan security officials for intimidating Mildred. We demand clarification into this deliberate threat against the journalist.
Canada: Journalist Nahreman Issa Targeted With Racist Hate Comments On Social Media. CFWIJ Condemns The Incident.
A Facebook user who goes by the name Jameson Balkie messaged journalist Nahreman Issa through the platform, attacking her expertise and professionalism by targeting her race. The vile message also attempted to body-shame the journalist. In response, Nahreman claimed that she is not opposed to taking constructive criticism from her readers, however, any critique that serves to espouse racist and fatphobic worldviews should not be tolerated.
India: Muslim Women Journalists, Activists, And Other Professionals Sexually Targeted Online. CFWIJ Demands Accountability Of Those Responsible.
A website targeting Muslim women including those in the news media industry was discovered earlier this month and was eventually taken down after public outrage. The website, titled “Sulli Deals” consisted of profiles of at least 90 different women who were “on sale”. Men would subsequently “bid” on these profiles to harass the women. Although a comprehensive list of all women on the site has not been made public in order to ensure the privacy of those targeted, several women have come out in condemnation. Among them was ThePrint’s Senior Correspondent Fatima Khan whose profile was up on the website.
Russia: CFWIJ Is Alarmed By The Threats Against Journalist Anna Mongayt
Anna Mongayt, a presenter for Dozhd TV, received online threats after interviewing a same-sex couple for Elle magazine. She revealed the details of the threats against her in a Facebook post. Reportedly, the supporters of a right-wing movement sent unsettling messages to Anna over Instagram. Followers of a movement called Male State called her a "creature" and warned her, "walk and look around". CFWIJ is alarmed by the callous nature of these attacks. As online threats morph far too often into physical assaults, we demand immediate action against the perpetrators behind these threats.
India: CFWIJ Is Monitoring The Persistent Harassment Against Journalist Shivani Handa
TV journalist Shivani Handa filed a harassment complaint against her husband and in-laws. She lodged a written complaint to the Commissioner of Police and the National Commission for Women. She accused her husband and his family of abuse and torture. According to Shivani, on June 2, the family violently assaulted her and threw her out of the house. CFWIJ condemns the torture against Shivani and demands an immediate inquiry into the harassment complaint.
Belarus: CFWIJ Condemns The Harassment Of Women Journalists And Crackdown Against The Free Press
Free press is facing extreme challenges in the country. Several women journalists are facing persecution in the form of unjustified detention, arrest and raids at apartments. Tatiana Smotkina, Anastasia Zanko and Alesia Latsinskaya are a few of those affected journalists. It's become a pattern in the country to target critical voices. CFWIJ condemns this ongoing practice against freedom of the press as the state is becoming extremely regressive towards free media and press. We also urge Belarusian authorities to stop abusing their power and let the journalists do their job fearlessly.
United States: CFWIJ Pays Tribute To Journalist Ayesha K. Faines
Influencer and journalist Ayesha K. Faines died suddenly on July 2 at the age of 35. No further announcement has been made for the cause of her death. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) mourns the sudden loss of Ayesha and offers sincere condolences to the journalist's family, friends and colleagues.

The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) condemns the threats against the journalist. We demand Brazilian authorities to conduct a swift investigation into the threat messages and ensure journalist’s safety.
