Turkey: CFWIJ Condemns Legal Harassment Of Journalists - Trials For Hazal Ocak, Sonya Bayik Meet Further Delays

Cases lodged against journalists Hazal Ocak and Sonya Bayık , prompted by their critical reporting, met with further delays on Thursday as separate courts postponed their hearings till February 8 and February 10, 2022, respectively. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) demands an end to legal harassment of journalists in attempts to intimidate them into silence. In both cases, the journalists face trial for exercising their journalistic right to report on matters of public interest.

Turkey: Trials Against Women Journalists Continue To Be Adjourned – Cumhuriyet’s Journalists Must Be Acquitted Of All Charges Immediately

The trial of Cumhuriyet newspaper reporter Hazal Ocak, managing editor Olcay Büyüktaş Akça, editor-in-chief İpek Özbey and photo-journalist Vedat Arık was held for the third time in İstanbul. The court adjourned the hearing to December 1, 2021, once again. Journalists face 14 years of prison sentence if they are convicted. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) finds filing unjust trials against journalists is a vicious attack on press freedom. We call the Turkish state to end the intimidation of journalists by legally harassing them. We reiterate once again that journalism is not a crime.

In June 2019, Cumhuriyet Newspaper reporter Hazal Ocak was sued for 20 thousand TL in financial compensation. The lawsuit followed her article titled ‘Tender Game in Şahinbey’ that exposed the corruption in Şahinbey Borough Council. The third hearing of the trial against the reporter held yesterday in İstanbul. The court dismissed the case against Hazal. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) welcomes the court verdict. We urge the judiciary to stand for the fundamental freedoms and rights of reporters. Therefore, we demand all journalists’ acquittal.

In June 2019, Cumhuriyet Newspaper writer Hazal Ocak was sued for 20 thousand TF in financial compensation. The lawsuit followed her article titled ‘Tender Game in Şahinbey’ that exposed the corruption in Şahinbey Borough Council. The second hearing of the case was postponed, due to the absence of both the prosecution and defence lawyers. The third hearing of the case will be held on March 3, 2021.
