Turkey: CFWIJ Welcomes Journalist Canan Coşkun’s Acquittal

Journalist Canan Coşkun appeared before an İstanbul court today (Thursday) to defend herself terrorism case against her. The court announced its verdict and Canan was eventually acquitted of all charges after many delayed hearings. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) welcomes this decision. The court’s verdict proves once again journalism is not a crime. We hope other fabricated cases against journalists are dismissed as well.

Turkey: CFWIJ Fears Escalating Crackdown On Press Freedom, Journalists Must Be Acquitted Of All Groundless Charges

It is a dark day for press freedom in Turkey. Today, four journalists appeared in court in four separate cases against them on terrorism charges. Each journalists’ trial -except Melike Aydın- was postponed yet again. Expert reports, testimonies of witnesses were given as an excuse to adjourn the hearings again. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) is aware that the constant postponement of trials is a new method managed to intimidate journalists. We strongly condemn the Turkish legal system and demand an immediate acquittal of journalists who allow the truth to be revealed. We reiterate that “Journalism is not a crime”.

Turkey: CFWIJ Demands Journalist Canan Coşkun’s Acquittal Immediately

The fourth hearing of the trial against journalist Canan Coşkun was held today in Istanbul. The journalist faces charges of "targeting the counter-terrorism officer to terrorist organizations". The court ruled to ask the result of the warrant written to the police service regarding the victim police officer and adjourned the next hearing to June 8, 2021. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) condemns the legal persecution against journalists who are bringing public issues to light and demands their acquittal.

Turkey: Journalist Canan Coşkun's Trial Postponed To The Next Year.

The third hearing of the trial against journalists Canan Coşkun, Ali Açar and Cansever Uğur was held at Istanbul’s 34th High Criminal Court on charges of "targeting the counter-terrorism officer to terrorist organizations". The trial was postponed to February 23, 2021, due to the lawyers needing to complete their defence. The Coalition For Women In Journalism condemns the legal harassment of journalists who are bringing public issues to light and demands their acquittal.
