The fourth hearing of the trial against journalist Canan Coşkun was held today in Istanbul. The journalist faces charges of "targeting the counter-terrorism officer to terrorist organizations". The court ruled to ask the result of the warrant written to the police service regarding the victim police officer and adjourned the next hearing to June 8, 2021. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) condemns the legal persecution against journalists who are bringing public issues to light and demands their acquittal.

During the Taksim Gezi Park protests, 15 years-old Berkin Elvan died as a result of a tear gas canister thrown by a police officer on June 16, 2013. After Berkin’s death, an investigation was conducted into the murder, with several journalists covering the details of the inquiry. Relating to the news stories they aired, one of the police officers involved in the investigation claimed that he was revealed and targeted by leftist organizations threatening his life. Consequently, journalists Canan Coşkun, Ali Açar and Cansever Uğur face a prison sentence of one to three years.

Canan’s story, "The Police Allegedly Shot Berkin Elvan Did Not Remember His Place of Duty", was published in the Cumhuriyet newspaper in March 2016. She stated in the first hearing that the police who shot Berkin Elvan could not even be identified for three years before her report. She added, to her defence, that she did not endorse the accusations.

At the fourth hearing, the court board ruled to ask the result of the warrant written to the police service regarding the victim police officer and adjourned the next hearing to June 8, 2021.

This trial is not the first case filed against Canan Coşkun. Previously, a lawsuit was filed on allegations of insulting the President for the article she wrote titled "Erdoğan ordered, journalism arrested". Coşkun was eventually acquitted of the charges.

The Coalition For Women In Journalism reminds, once again, that reporting for public interest should not lead to arbitrary indictments. We believe freedom of the press must exist to ensure a free and fair society. We demand that Canan Coşkun and other journalists be acquitted of all charges against them.
