Turkey: During The Tenth Hearing Of Isminaz Temel And Havva Cuştan, Travel Bans Still Not Lifted Citing Journalists In Exile
The tenth hearing of the case where ETHA editor İsminaz Temel and Havva Cuştan along with 21 others are charged with “membership of terror organization” and “propaganda of terror organization” was held today. While the journalists didn’t attend the hearing, the request of their lawyers for lifting of judicial control measures and travel ban was refused. The judge ironically cited journalist Can Dündar who is now in exile, stating “those who will not get acquitted of charges carry the risk of running to exile”, almost admitting that the court did not have any intentions to acquit the journalists of the charges.

Menace towards journalists in Germany is on the rise with right-wing extremism taking the platform more publicly in the country. PEGIDA (anti-Islamist right-wing movement) has been attacking press since its formation in 2014. Mexico: Legal Harassment Of Journalist Carmen Olsen Continues With A Defamation Case
Carmen Olsen, a journalist in Baja California State who investigates acts of corruption committed by the police chief of Rosarito, a town located just 25 km from the U.S. border was harassed by municipal police officers as she tried to take pictures of an unlawful arrest in January 2013. Policemen bruised Carmen severely as they tried to drag her out of her car. She managed to stay in the car, but then policemen had it towed away, and paraded through the center of the city, while she was still in it. Carmen Olsen was detained for three hours, illegally, as there were no charges to arrest her on.

President of the United States Donald Trump is notorious in his treatment of journalists, especially by making demeaning remarks against women journalists. Intolerance of Donald Trump and his staff once again took stage yesterday when they kicked out New York Times reporter Kathy Gray who was following Donald Trump’s campaign rally in Michigan. After posting on social media about the crowds and the lack of masks among the thousands of attendees, Kathy was tracked down by the campaign staff and was escorted out.

Gazeteci Hülya Kılınç’ın Libya’da ölen bir MİT mensubunun cenazesini haberleştirmesi üzerine açılan davada karar duruşması bugün görüldü. Hülya Kılınç “Devletin güvenliği veya iç veya dış siyasal yararları bakımından niteliği itibarıyla gizli kalması gereken bilgileri açıkladığı” suçlaması ile son altı aydır cezaevindeydi. Davanın bugün görülen duruşmasında gazeteci TCK 329 yönünden beraat etti ancak hakkında “Millî İstihbarat Teşkilatının görev ve faaliyetlerine ilişkin bilgi ve belgeleri basın ve medya yoluyla yayımlamak” suçuyla 3 yıl 9 ay hapis cezasına hükmedildi. Gazetecinin cezaevinde geçirdiği süre göz önüne alınarak tahliyesine karar verildi.
Turkey: Hülya Kilinç Along With Six Other Journalists Were Released But Charged With “Opposition To The Law On National Intelligence Agency”
The verdict hearing in the lawsuit filed against journalist Hülya Kılınç for her report on the death of a MİT (National Intelligence Agency) officer in Libya was held today. Hülya Kılınç has been in prison for the past six months and is charged with "disclosing information that should remain confidential due to the nature of the security of the state or domestic or foreign political benefits". At the hearing held today, the journalist was acquitted in terms of TCK 329, but was sentenced to 3 years and 9 months in prison for "publishing information and documents regarding the duties and activities of the National Intelligence Organization through the press and media". Considering the time spent in prison, the journalist was released.

Haziran ayından bu yana “devletin güvenliği veya iç veya dış siyasal yararları itibarıyla gizli kalması gereken bilgileri yaymak” iddiasıyla Ankara Sincan cezaevinde bulunan OdaTV Ankara Haber Müdürü Müyesser Yıldız hakkında geçtiğimiz sene Milli Savunma Bakanı Hulusi Akar’ın açmış olduğu tazminat davası bugün karara bağlandı. 250.000 TL manevi tazminat talepli davada hakim kısmi kabule karar vererek Müyesser Yıldız’ın 20.000 TL manevi tazminat ödemesi ve hükmün, masrafları Müyesser Yıldız’dan alınmak üzere en yüksek tirajlı gazetede yayınlanmasına karar verdi.
