New Zealand: Holly Henry Shares With Her Audience The Sexism She Faces At Work-CFWIJ Extends Solidarity
Holly Henry, a reporter based in Christchurch, took to her social media to report the harassment and abuse she faces as a field reporter. The nature of the abuse is expectedly gendered. However, it was disheartening to see women also add to the harassment she had to face. Holly received support from her followers but there was little response from the relevant authorities despite the fact that the matter needed urgent redressal.
Pakistan: CFWIJ Condemns Indian Cricketer’s Comments Against Pakistani Journalist
Former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh got into what can only be described as a juvenile twitter spat with Pakistani fast bowler Mohammad Amir in the aftermath of the India vs. Pakistan fixture in the ongoing T20 World Cup. The two recalled moments from their rivalry arguing which side has historically fared better, when the conversation became extremely vile and loaded with personal attacks. Pakistani journalist Iqra Nasir, like many cricket fans from either side of the border, intervened to offer support to her cricket team and was abused by Singh as he attempted to counter her argument.
Türkiye: CFWIJ Gazeteci Pınar Gayıp’a Açılan Soruşturmayı Kınıyor – Gazetecilik Suç Değildir
İpek Er’e cinsel saldırıda bulunan ve intihar ederek ölüme neden olan jandarma uzman çavuş Musa Orhan’a ilişkin yaptığı haber ve sosyal medya paylaşımı gerekçesiyle ETHA editörü Pınar Gayıp hakkında soruşturma açıldı. Gazeteci ‘terörle mücadelede yer almış kişileri hedef göstermek’le suçlanıyor. Gazetecilikte Kadın Koalisyonu (CFWIJ) olarak Pınar’a açılan soruşturmayı kınıyoruz. Yetkililere gazetecilik mesleğinin kamuoyunu ilgilendiren gelişmelere dair bilgilendirmekle sorumlu olduğunu hatırlatıyor, gazeteci hakkında atfedilen asılsız suçlamaya dair derhal takipsizlik kararı verilmesini talep ediyoruz. Gazetecilik suç değildir.
Turkey: Legal Probe Launched Against Pinar Gayip, Who Reported Rape Allegations Against Army Sergeant Musa Orhan
A legal inquiry has been initiated against Etkin News Agency reporter Pınar Gayıp under allegations of “targeting a counter-terrorism official”. Pınar reported army sergeant Musa Orhan’s rape of İpek Er, who died by suicide after she came forward with Orhan’s assault on her. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) condemns the legal harassment of journalists. We remind the authorities that such attempts to keep journalists from holding power to account are intolerable. We demand for legal action against Pınar based on unfounded allegations to be immediately halted. The CFWIJ reiterates, journalism is not a crime.

M Radhakrishnan came under fire, when it was reported that he broke into the premises of a woman journalist and harassed her due to political differences between them. United States: Liz Habib Opens Up About Exploitation In Sports Journalism
In a recent interview given to a US publication, sports journalist Liz Habib opened up about the rampant exploitation in sports journalism and the undue pressure women sports journalists have to face to survive in the industry. The issues she touched upon ranged from questionable job security to the objectification of women journalists working in the field. Her interview highlighted that issues in sports journalism, especially against women journalists, are structural and deep seated. They require urgent redressal, the Coalition For Women In Journalism believes.
United States: CFWIJ Condemns Steven Crowder's Racist Remarks Against Betty Yu
Conservative YouTube personality Steven Crowder targeted KPIX 5 reporter Betty Yu in a video published on Wednesday. The episode began as a commentary on Betty's report on a dispute between city health officials and a restaurant chain regarding COVID protocols, however quickly devolved into deeply racist comments about the journalist herself. The video has rightfully received widespread condemnation from Betty's colleagues and employers alike.
Kazakhstan: Chief Editor Zarina Akhmatova Forced To Resign To Restore Blocked Hola News Website
HOLA News editor-in-chief Zarina Akhmatova and founders Alisher Kaidarov and Adilet Tursynbek were forced to resign after the website of the independent news network was made widely inaccessible for users. HOLA News was forced to remove its report on the Pandora Papers, implicating former president Nursultan Nazarbayev’s believed extra-marital partner Assel Kurmanbayeva as a beneficiary of secretive offshore payments, before its website was restored after 10 days. The Coalition For Women In Journalism is deeply concerned at this blatant infringement on press freedom. We extend solidarity to Zarina, and HOLA News founders and team, and demand that the news organization is allowed to operate independently without interference.
Palestine: CFWIJ Condemns The Physical Assault And Racial Abuse Faced By Journalist Nisreen Salem
Journalist Nisreen Salem was physically assaulted and racially abused by officers of the Israel Defense Force while at a check post. In a video published by a local news platform, Nisreen recounts the violence she faced at the hands of the officials. The overreaches by the Israeli armed forces has received global attention and condemnation recently, and the recent attack appears to be an addition to the patterns of state violence Israel has routinely exhibited towards Palestinian citizens.

Mahkeme, yargılanan bütün gazetecilerin adli kontrol tedbirlerinin kaldırılmasına ancak el konulan ekipmanların iade talebinin reddine karar verdi. Bir sonraki duruşma 6 Ocak 2022 tarihinde görülecek. Gazetecilikte Kadın Koalisyonu (CFWIJ), gerçeği açığa çıkaran gazetecilerin derhal beraatini talep ediyor. Mesleki faaliyetlerini yerine getirdiği için hiçbir gazeteci yargılanmamalıdır. Gazetecilik suç değildir.
Turkey: Nazan Sala, Sehriban Abi, Zeynep Durgut Continue To Face Trial For Reporting On Van Military Violence As Court Adjourns Hearing
Lifting all judicial controls imposed on Nazan Sala, Sehriban Abi, Zeynep Durgat and two other journalists charged with “membership in a terrorist organization”, for reporting on two Van citizens tortured by the military, the court adjourned the hearing till January 6, 2022. At the third hearing of the case on Thursday, the Van 5th High Criminal Court denied the defence lawyers’ request to return the journalists’ seized equipment. The Coalition For Women In Journalism is relieved that judicial measures imposed on the journalists, who spent six months in pre-trial detention, have been lifted. However, we reiterate that journalism is not a crime. We demand that all fabricated charges against Jin News reporter Sehriban Abi, freelance journalist Nazan Sala and Mesopotamia Agency reporters Zeynep Durgat, Adnan Bilen and Cemil Uğur are immediately dropped. The CFWIJ vigilantly monitors violations against women journalists in Turkey and we urge the authorities to stop weaponizing the country’s terror laws against journalists.
Pakistan: Unsafe For Journalists? CFWIJ Condemns Ruling Party’s Move To Malign Senior Journalist Asma Shirazi
Prominent broadcast journalist and Coalition For Women In Journalism member Asma Shirazi has been hit with yet another government-backed organized troll campaign. Reacting to a column penned by Asma in BBC Urdu, the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s official Twitter account posted a video purportedly of a mobile phone conversation between Asma and thrice ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif. The ruling party’s Twitter handle attempted to discredit and align Asma and accused her of “obedience” to a “certified chor [thief] and absconder”. The CFWIJ condemns the use of such rhetoric by the party, which leads Pakistan’s federal government. Such acts by a government already under criticism for encroaching on the freedom of the press, in a country known for its frequent violations against journalists, place a target on journalists’ backs.
Colombia: The Inter-American Court Of Human Rights Declares State Of Colombia Responsible For Assault On Jineth Bedoya — CFWIJ Welcomes The Judgment
The Inter-American Court of Human Rights held the Colombian state responsible for the abduction, rape, and torture of journalist Jineth Bedoya in 2000. The court claimed that officials of the state were not only directly responsible for the torture Jineth suffered but institutions enabled the sexual assault by not taking the threats against Jineth seriously despite earlier complaints. The courts believed the negligence was a result of gender discrimination and ordered that those involved should be given adequate punishment.

Kapatılan Taraf gazetesinin eski yöneticisi Yasemin Çongar'ın yargılandığı davada mahkeme heyeti reddedildi. Davada yarın (19 Ekim) hükmün açıklanması bekleniyordu. Ancak, mahkeme itiraz süresini dikkate alarak duruşmayı 12 Kasım’a erteledi. Gazetecilikte Kadın Koalisyonu (CFWIJ) olarak basın özgürlüğüne gölge düşüren söz konusu davaları kınıyoruz. Gazeteciliğin suç olmadığını yineliyor, Yasemin’in derhal beraatını talep ediyoruz.
