Nicaragua: Imprisoned Woman Journalist Lucía Pineda Ubau Released

Location: Nicaragua, Managua
Date: June 12, 2019

After more than two months of detainment, of which 41 days were spent in a maximum security prison, Lucía Pineda Ubau has been released.

On June 11, 57 political prisoners were released from prison, which included Pineda Ubau. The release was a result of a new law passed through the Nicaraguan National Assembly, which grants amnesty to both the protestors and police officials who were a part of the 2018 protests that rocked Nicaragua.

Lucía was the news director of 100% Noticias and continued to report on the events connected to the protests till the time of her arrest on December 22, 2018. She was accused of inciting violence and promoting terrorism, and was the only woman journalist imprisoned in Latin America. She was first placed in El Chipote, a prison that is widely known for torturing its occupants.

During her time there, Lucía was confined to an underground cell without a bunk or mattress. She was kept in deplorable conditions without access to sunlight, which eventually affected her health. The journalist was not allowed any visits from her family. She was then moved to La Esperanza, a women’s only prison where she was isolated in a cell without a toilet.

While she was imprisoned, 100% Noticias was brought down by the government, with several members of staff either being arrested or forced to live in self-exile.T he Coalition For Women In Journalism welcomes Lucía’s release from prison, but also hopes that no journalist will ever have to suffer the horrendous treatment meted out to her. We urge authorities to be on the right side of history by promoting freedom of speech instead of stifling it.
