Egypt: Journalist Yasmeen Saed Released On Bail. CFWIJ Welcomes The Release But Urges Egyptian Authorities To Stop Targeting Journalists

Journalist Yasmeen Saeid was released on a 5000 L.E approximately (350 $) bail yesterday. The Coalition For Women In Journalism welcomes this news and urges the Egyptian authorities to stop targeting and intimidating journalists.
On July 5, Yasmeen was abducted and spent 9 days in enforced disappearance before being interrogated by the General Prosecution office in Alexandria.
Yasmeen is facing charges of creating fake social media accounts to disrupt public order and endanger society's safety and security by spreading rumors and fake news.
These charges are identified now among human rights lawyers as “the list”. Prosecution officers are pressing these charges as a package against prisoners of conscience, journalists, human rights defenders, or political activists.
Over the past few years, the status of press freedom in Egypt has deteriorated catastrophically. New laws were passed to limit and restrict freedom of expression. Journalists are targeted and hundreds are behind bars for unidentified periods in pre-trial arbitrary detention.
The Coalition For Women In Journalism welcomes the release of Yasmeen. We remain concerned about the safety of journalists in Egypt and urge the Egyptian regime to stop targeting journalists and liberate press freedom in Egypt.
