A magistrate court slapped a five-year stalking order on far-right, islamophobic public personality Tommy Robinson on Wednesday after he threatened and abused journalist Lizzie Dearden outside her home. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) lauds the court’s decision to reprimand Robinson for his actions. We rejoice in the knowledge that the journalist’s safety and wellbeing was prioritized and Robinson’s efforts to deter Lizzie from her reportage were thwarted.
Afghanistan: CFWIJ Plays Its Part In Aiding Relocation Of Journalists And Other Vulnerable Groups In The Country After The Taliban Takeover.
The withdrawal of the US troops from Afghanistan after the failure of their nation-building experiment in the region that began two decades ago, and the subsequent Taliban takeover of Kabul has resulted in widespread fear across the country. Several journalists, news media organizations, activists, non-government organizations, women and minority groups now fear a threat to their lives and seek asylum elsewhere.

Azucena Uresti, a broadcast journalist associated with the Radio Formula and Multimedios, was threatened in a video message from a drug cartel group. She is one the best-known TV hosts, who presents Milenio TV's nightly news program. Cartel Jalisco New Generation (CJNG) threatened other media outlets that cover the Michoacan region, where the cartel often disputes and engages with other armed groups. In the video message, Azucena Uresti was named and threatened directly.
Afghanistan: CFWIJ Is Concerned For The Safety Of Storay Karimi And Somaia Valizadeh
Storay Karimi, the only war correspondent associated with Pajhwok Afghan News, had to leave her home this week after she received death threats from extremists. Storay was reporting from the western city of Herat before heading to Kabul. Another woman journalist, Somaia Valizadeh, also expressed her concerns over the control of extremist elements. Somaia voiced that women journalists will have to leave their jobs and livelihood if the Taliban takes Herat.

Journalist Francesca Scognamiglio Petino received a death threat on her Facebook profile after she shared the government’s notification regarding the Green Pass. The Green Pass is a COVID-19 safety measure restricting movement of the unvaccinated citizens in order to curb the spread of the disease. The institution of the Green Pass has received severe backlash from right-wing political parties in the country, resulting in several journalists feeling unsafe and vulnerable to threats and attacks by supporters of these groups.
India: Masrat Zahra’s Father Assaulted By The Police. CFWIJ Condemns These Intimidation Tactics
Photojournalist Masrat Zahra alleged that the police assaulted her father in order to intimidate her. Currently, based in Germany, Masrat took to her Twitter account to post pictures of her injured father after the police denied allegations. Upon further questioning a member of the law enforcement agency even went on to say that they were unaware of Masrat’s connection with the family when they assaulted the man, otherwise their actions would have been more severe.
Spain: CFWIJ Condemns The Targeted Harassment Of Sonia Lopez By Anti-mask Protestors
Sonia Lopez, a correspondent for Antena 3, was harassed while covering an anti-mask demonstration in the Plaza de Colón, Madrid. The movement, named World March For Freedom, was protesting the use of masks and the administration of vaccines in minors. Sonia was recording a segment for the program Espejo Público when protestors started to shout insulting slurs at the journalist.
China: CFWIJ Condemns The Public Harassment Of Alice Su And Katrina Yu
July 27, 2021- Beijing bureau chief for the Los Angeles Times, Alice Su, colleague Katrina You were harangued, alongside their crew members, by members of the public in China.
On July 25th, The journalists were covering the devastation caused by torrential rains and floods in Zhengzhou, Henan province when they were surrounded by an angry mob who yelled at them to leave China. Both Alice and her fellow crew member found themselves in the middle of chaos with nowhere to escape. A video available on Twitter shows Alice trying to deescalate the situation by translating the crowds' messages. CFWIJ is dismayed by the hostile attitude towards foreign media in the country. This recent incident is a direct violation of the basic principles of press freedom. We urge the Chinese authorities to investigate this pattern of harassments and take necessary action.
Russia: CFWIJ Is Alarmed By The Threats Against Journalist Anna Mongayt
Anna Mongayt, a presenter for Dozhd TV, received online threats after interviewing a same-sex couple for Elle magazine. She revealed the details of the threats against her in a Facebook post. Reportedly, the supporters of a right-wing movement sent unsettling messages to Anna over Instagram. Followers of a movement called Male State called her a "creature" and warned her, "walk and look around". CFWIJ is alarmed by the callous nature of these attacks. As online threats morph far too often into physical assaults, we demand immediate action against the perpetrators behind these threats.
