Afghanistan: CFWIJ Concerned About Safety of Beheshta Arghand
Female anchor Beheshta Arghand left Afghanistan due to the deteriorating political conditions in the country. Arghand came into public view after interviewing Maulvi Abdulhaq Hemad, a high ranking Taliban representative earlier in August for TOLO News. The interview got international attention since this was the first time a Taliban representative had given an interview to an Afghan woman journalist.

Federal Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry casually labeled prominent journalists and media houses in Pakistan as being “agenda-driven”. On September 1, he appeared on the News Eye program on Dawn News, where he was questioned on how the government has not completed its investigation of any of the three attacks that occurred in the capital.

Pakistan: CFWIJ Condemns The Persistent Trolling Faced By Political Commentator Reema Omer
Political commentator Reema Omer was targeted with incessant trolling by supporters of the current government after her interaction with Dr. Yuen Yuen Ang. The issue concerned one of the books written by the professor that Reema had earlier referenced on her own account. Dr. Yuen Yuen Ang’s disagreement with her interpretation led to widespread trolling by those who do not appreciate Omer’s critical stance on the current state of affairs in the country.
United States: CFWIJ is Appalled By The Threats Faced By Susan Slusser
A sportswriter and beat reporter for the San Francisco Giants, Susan Slusser was accosted by a drunk man as she left Oracle Park after the game on Sunday, September 5. In a tweet, the journalist shared the incident and mentioned she was rescued by a group of Los Angeles fans. The CFWIJ is alarmed by the threats she endured. Susan was fortunate that the fans intervened, otherwise, the situation could have escalated quickly. The CFWIJ demands authorities apprehend the aggressor involved in the incident.
Myanmar: CFWIJ Alarmed By Journalist Ma Thuzar’s State Abduction
Freelance journalist Ma Thuzar was abruptly taken into custody by military officials earlier this month. Her family confirmed this instance of state abduction and admitted that they have lost all contact with Ma Thuzar. She was taken into custody on September 1, and the family has been unable to locate her since. Ma Thuzar’s residence was raided in May earlier this year.

At least five women journalists were impeded by the police forces while following September 1 World Peace Day demonstration in İstanbul. The police attempted to confiscate journalist Eylem Nazlıer’s phone, who was filming the police violence against the demonstration. At least four female journalists’ right to report was violated. South Sudan: CFWIJ Condemns The Interrogation Against Journalists Maura Ajak And Yom Manas
Security forces confiscated three journalists' equipment, two of whom were women, while following the opening of parliament by President Salva Kiir in Juba's Freedom Hall. Journalists were also briefly detained. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) condemns the impediment against journalists. We demand authorities to end intimidation policies against journalists in the country. Journalists must freely do their jobs.

MJ Akbar is an Indian journalist and politicians who was among the most notable personalities who were accused of sexual harassment during the MeToo moment in India. Priya Ramani alleged that she was sexually harassed by Akbar, following which several women, including women journalists, came forth with their own testimonies against him which ranged from rape to sexual misconduct.

Journalist Virginia Suárez was threatened with death by an unknown commentator during her live broadcast. Virginia filed a criminal complaint with the Los Ríos Prosecutor's Office for the crime of intimidation against her. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) is extremely concerned about the journalist’s safety. We demand Ecuadorian authorities to conduct a swift investigation into the threats and ensure Virginia’s safety.
Myanmar: CFWIJ Condemns The Unlawful Arrest of Htet Htet Khine by Military Authorities
Htet Htet Khine, a freelance producer for BBC Media Action, was arrested by military authorities on August 15, along with Sithu Aung Myint, an independent columnist and commentator. The military-run Myawaddy reported the arrest of both journalists. The two were supposedly hiding in an apartment in the Bahan Township of Yangon when police arrested them.
