Turkey: CFWIJ Demands Justice For Journalists Şehriban Abi, Nazan Sala And Zeynep Durgut, Journalism Is Not A Crime

The second hearing of the trial against journalists Şehriban Abi, Nazan Sala and Zeynep Durgut was held today in Van. Journalists are facing charges of “being a member of a terrorist organization" due to their journalistic coverage. The court adjourned the next hearing to October 21, 2021, ruling that the missing elements of the case should be completed. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) demands the journalists' acquittal immediately who revealed the truth and set an example of good journalism. We reiterate once again, journalism is not a crime.

Kapatılan Özgür Gündem gazetesine düzenlenen polis baskınında darp edilerek gözaltına alınan gazeteciler hakkında açılan dava onuncu kez ertelendi. Aralarında beş kadın gazetecinin de yargılandığı bir sonraki duruşma 23 Kasım 2021 tarihine ertelendi. Gazetecilikte Kadın Koalisyonu (CFWIJ) olarak gazetecilere yönelik sürekli ertelenen duruşmaların, gazetecileri susturmak ve sindirmek amacıyla uygulanan yeni bir yöntem olduğuna inanıyoruz. Yeni Yaşam Gazetesi editörü Hatice Şahin’e “silahlı örgüt üyeliği” suçlamasıyla açılan davanın üçüncü duruşması bugün Diyarbakır’da görüldü. Mahkeme, gizli tanık ifadesinde adı geçen gazeteci Kibriye Evren’in yargılandığı davanın iddianame ve duruşma tutanaklarının Diyarbakır 5. Ağır Ceza Mahkemesi’nden istenmesine karar vererek duruşmayı 11 Ekim’e erteledi. Gazetecilikte Kadın Koalisyonu (CFWIJ) olarak haksız yere açılan davaların sürekli ertelenerek gazetecileri yıldırmaya çalışılmasını kınıyor. Gazeteciliğin suç olmadığını yineliyoruz. Poland: CFWIJ Is Monitoring The Investigation Against Journalist Aleksandra Klich-Siewiorek

Prominent journalist and editor-in-chief of women’s magazine Wysokie Obcasy, Aleksandra Klich-Siewiorek, is under investigation in the public prosecutor’s office. The journalist is accused of violating religious sentiments in one of her published articles. The magazine is under fire for publishing a cartoon of the Virgin Mary wearing a lightning bolt face mask as a symbol of resistance and empowerment against the restrictions on reproductive rights in Poland. CFWIJ is observing the situation as it unfolds. We urge the authorities at the public prosecutor’s office in Poland to end the Aleksandra unjustifiably.

Three journalists from digital media platform Soch Videos were arrested by Sindh police for covering protests organized by working-class communities outside Bilawal House. Fizza Qureshi and Gul Nayani who have been consistently reporting on the housing crisis in the city were present on site. According to Fizza, the Sindh police was deployed solely to disrupt a peaceful protest in order to silence the legitimate grievances of those affected by the capitalist policies of the state.
