The trial against journalists was postponed for the tenth time. The next hearing, in which five women journalists were tried, was postponed to November 23 2021. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) considers the trials against journalists that are constantly postponed as a new method to silence and intimidate journalists. Journalists must be acquitted immediately.

Yeni Yaşam Gazetesi editörü Hatice Şahin’e “silahlı örgüt üyeliği” suçlamasıyla açılan davanın üçüncü duruşması bugün Diyarbakır’da görüldü. Mahkeme, gizli tanık ifadesinde adı geçen gazeteci Kibriye Evren’in yargılandığı davanın iddianame ve duruşma tutanaklarının Diyarbakır 5. Ağır Ceza Mahkemesi’nden istenmesine karar vererek duruşmayı 11 Ekim’e erteledi. Gazetecilikte Kadın Koalisyonu (CFWIJ) olarak haksız yere açılan davaların sürekli ertelenerek gazetecileri yıldırmaya çalışılmasını kınıyor. Gazeteciliğin suç olmadığını yineliyoruz. The third hearing of the case against Yeni Yaşam Newspaper editor Hatice Şahin on the charge of being affiliated with an armed organisation was held in Diyarbakır today. The court adjourned the hearing yet again for the third time. The next hearing will be held on October 11. We demand Hatice’s acquittal immediately.

Prominent journalist and editor-in-chief of women’s magazine Wysokie Obcasy, Aleksandra Klich-Siewiorek, is under investigation in the public prosecutor’s office. The journalist is accused of violating religious sentiments in one of her published articles. The magazine is under fire for publishing a cartoon of the Virgin Mary wearing a lightning bolt face mask as a symbol of resistance and empowerment against the restrictions on reproductive rights in Poland. CFWIJ is observing the situation as it unfolds. We urge the authorities at the public prosecutor’s office in Poland to end the Aleksandra unjustifiably.

Darya Komarova, a correspondent for the Idel Realities project of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, faced another episode of legal persecution by judicial authorities. The Chuvashia regional Supreme Court overturned the acquittal decision previously issued by the Leninsky district court.

The journalist was sued over allegations of being a member of a terrorist organisation and spreading its propaganda. The court postponed the hearing again. Journalist Kibriye must be acquitted of all charges she faces.

Three journalists from digital media platform Soch Videos were arrested by Sindh police for covering protests organized by working-class communities outside Bilawal House. Fizza Qureshi and Gul Nayani who have been consistently reporting on the housing crisis in the city were present on site. According to Fizza, the Sindh police was deployed solely to disrupt a peaceful protest in order to silence the legitimate grievances of those affected by the capitalist policies of the state.

Several women journalists face gendered attacks and threats on Twitter after criticizing Prime Minister Imran Khan for his remarks on the rising rates of sexual violence in the country. In a recent interview with an international media outlet, Khan reasserted his misogynistic comments regarding rape in the country, linking the crime to the attire of the survivor.

The trial against Özgür Gündem newspaper’s former editor, Reyhan Çapan was adjourned for the 20th time. Today the court ruled to eliminate the missing elements of the case file and postponed the next hearing to November 3, 2021. The Coalition For Women In Journalism condemns the attempts to intimidate journalists with the unjust trials that are constantly postponed. We demand the acquittal of Reyhan and other journalists immediately. Journalism is not a crime.
