Turkey: CFWIJ Demands End to Constantly Deferred Cases
The 12th hearing of the trial against Etkin News Agency (ETHA) editor İsminaz Temel and reporter Havva Cuştan on terrorism charges was held today. The court ruled to complete the missing elements of the case file and postponed the hearing again. The next hearing will take place on October 12. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) finds the constant postponement aims to intimidate and silence the journalists. We demand İsminaz and Havva's acquittal immediately.

Gazeteci Melis Alphan'a, 2015 Diyarbakır’da düzenlenen Newroz etkinliğinden sosyal medyada paylaştığı fotoğraf nedeniyle "örgüt propagandası yapmak" suçlamasıyla açılan davanın ikinci duruşması bugün İstanbul’da görüldü. Mahkeme, gazetecinin beraatına karar verdi. Gazetecilikte Kadın Koalisyonu (CFWIJ) olarak kararı memnuniyetle karşılıyoruz. Alphan’a yönelik açılan davada çıkan karar bir kez daha gazeteciliğin suç olmadığını ispatlar niteliktedir. Söz konusu davada verilen beraat kararının haksız gerekçeler gösterilerek yargılanan tüm gazetecilere emsal teşkil etmesini talep ediyoruz.
Turkey: CFWIJ Welcomes Journalist Melis Alphan’s Acquittal
The second hearing of the trial against journalist Melis Alphan on the charge of "spreading terrorist propaganda" was held today in Istanbul. The court acquitted the journalist from all the accusations. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ), welcomes the court order. The verdict yet again proves that journalism is not a crime. We demand acquittal for all journalists who were prosecuted on unfair grounds.
Russia: CFWIJ Welcomes The Dismissal Of The Case Against Tatyana Voltskaya By The Russian Court
Tatyana Volstkaya was finally acquitted of the baseless charges filed against her for spreading misinformation on May 4. The Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) correspondent was facing a criminal investigation for a story she published in April 2020. The journalist reported on the shortage of ventilators for COVID-19 patients in hospitals throughout Saint Petersburg, quoting an unnamed physician. After the article was published on the RFE/RL website, Russian media regulator Roskomnadzor asked the news outlet to take it down, but they refused to comply.

Mahkeme heyeti, gazetecinin beraatına karar verdi. Gazetecilikte Kadın Koalisyonu (CFWIJ) olarak mahkeme kararını memnuniyetle karşılıyoruz. Ancak, yargılanan diğer gazeteciler için aynı kararın verilmesini talep ediyoruz. Gazetecilik suç değildir.

The second hearing of the trial against Yeni Yaşam Newspaper Managing Editor İnci Aydın on the charge of "spreading terrorist propaganda for an organization" was held today in Istanbul. The court ruled to acquit the journalist. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) welcomes the court ruling. However, we demand the same decision for other journalists on trial. Journalism is not a crime.

Demokrat Haber editörü Selda Manduz’un “silahlı terör örgütüne üye olmak” suçlamasıyla yargılandığı davanın üçüncü duruşması bugün görüldü. Mahkeme de dava savcısı da gazetecinin beraatına hükmetti. Manduz mahkeme kararıyla bütün suçlamalardan beraat etti. Gazetecilikte Kadın Koalisyonu (CFWIJ) olarak kararı memnuniyetle karşılıyoruz. Kararın gazeteciliğin suç olmadığını kanıtlar nitelikle olduğuna inanıyoruz. Aynı kararın yargılanan tüm gazeteciler için emsal olmasını talep ediyoruz.

The third hearing of the trial against Democrat-News editor Selda Manduz on the charge of being affiliated with an armed terrorist organization was held today. The court ruled the journalist’s acquittal. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) welcomes the decision. We find the verdict proved that journalism is not a crime. We demand the same decision to set a precedent for all journalists on trial.

The fifth hearing of the trial against journalist Seyhan Avşar was held today in İstanbul. Seyhan was tried for “identifying a public officer as a target for terrorist organizations”. The court decided Seyhan’s acquittal. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) welcomes the court verdict and demands similar decisions to all journalists who are on trial. We reiterate once again; Journalism is not a crime.

Gazeteci Hatice Kamer, altı yıl önce Diyarbakır’da takip ettiği haberleri sosyal medya hesabında paylaştığı gerekçe gösterilerek hakkında “örgüt propagandası yapmak” suçlamasıyla 7 buçuk yıla kadar hapis cezası istemiyle yargılanıyordu. Bugün görülen davada gazeteci Kamer, beraat etti. Gazetecilikte Kadın Koalisyonu mahkeme kararını memnuniyetle karşılıyor, gazeteciliğin suç olmadığını yineliyor.

Journalist Hatice Kamer was being tried with a sentence of up to seven years on charges of spreading propaganda for a terrorist organization over her journalistic coverages she posted on her social media account six years ago. Hatice was acquitted in the first hearing of the trial which was held in Diyarbakır today. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) welcomes the court decision. We reiterate once again that journalism is not a crime.
Philippines: CFWIJ Welcomes The Court Decision To Clear Journalist Lady Ann Salem Of All Charges Against Her.
A Mandaluyong court cleared journalist Ann Salem and trade unionist Rodrigo Esparago of all charges and voided the search warrant that was issued against them. Salem and Espargo were arrested on December 10, 2020.
