Hockey Night Punjabi broadcaster, Amrit Gill, was targeted by vicious online trolls. Amrit posted a picture of her excitement in hosting Hockey Night Canada only to face an onslaught of derogatory remarks. The comments, most of them now deleted, under Amrit's tweet were disrespectful and insensitive. CFWIJ condemns the malicious online attacks against the journalist. We believe in inclusivity and every woman’s right to a safe space online.

United States: CFWIJ Is Concerned About The Controversial Termination Of Lauren Wolfe
Lauren Wolfe, a former New York Times editor, tweeted a picture last Tuesday of President Biden’s plane landing in Washington captioned, “I have chills”. Lauren was then viciously trolled by far-right supremacists, targeted with rape and death threats. Following the outcry, news of her termination from The New York Times was announced. While the newspaper has clarified its position that Lauren was not a contract employee, her friends came to her defense on Twitter, calling out the right-wing radicals behind the retaliation. CFWIJ is utterly dismayed by the New York Times’ decision against the journalist. We hope she will be compensated for her hard work and dedication.
England: CFWIJ Denounces Tory Mps For Their Intimidation And Criticism Of Journalist Robyn Vinter
Robyn Vinter, an investigative journalist and contributor to The Yorkshire Post, faced online intimidation and criticism from several Tory MPs, including Nadhim Zahawi and Nigel Adams. The officials targeted Robyn for her story on the problematic Covid vaccine distribution in the region. Government representatives called the report inaccurate and publicly termed it as false and dangerous. The NHS director, Dr. Nikki Kanani, confirmed to BBC that Robyn Vinter’s piece was, in fact, based on findings depicting the problems with the vaccine rollout.

CTV reporter Krista Sharpe posted a video of her experience with harassment on her Twitter account. In the recording, she is seen filming a broadcast in downtown Kitchener when a car drives past her, hurling vulgar insults. Sharpe was very disturbed by the uncalled for, hurtful insults. According to the police, they have started their investigation and are looking for the car seen in the footage. CFWIJ is dismayed by the public harassment Krista suffered. We offer her our full support and urge authorities to find the perpetrators and hold them accountable for their actions. No journalist should be intimidated nor harassed in such a manner.

Layal Alikhtiar became the target of a hate campaign that was initiated against her by a separatist organisation. She was targeted with death threats over a tweet that she posted on January 5. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) follows the deliberate smear campaign against Layal with great concern. We demand authorities to take immediate action to stop online abuse towards the journalist.

Brussels based journalist Tanja Milevska was targeted by gender-based online trolling. The journalist was threatened after responding to a misogynistic thread about the gaming community. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) is utterly dismayed by the vicious attacks against Tanja. We urge authorities to investigate these online smear campaigns as these threats can have severe consequences.

The campaign followed the airing of the interview of former Finance Minister Ishaq Dar with the BBC News and Naya Dour. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) believes these deliberate attacks are aimed to intimidate Ailia for her coverage. We call on the authorities to end their vicious attempts to intimidate the press. Journalists should be able to do their jobs in a free and fair environment. We reiterate that targeting and threatening members of the press is unacceptable.
