Ghana: CFWIJ Condemns The Arbitrary Detention Of Journalist Zoe Abu-baidoo Addo And Her Colleague Caleb Kudah
Police officers in the capital arbitrarily detained and beat journalist Caleb Kudah. While he was kept in custody, the officers discovered the data Kudah had shared with colleague Zoe Abu-Baidoo Addo. Addo was then tricked into coming to the police station where she, too, was detained by officials, who also confiscated her phone.
Belarus: Pressure On TUT.BY Escalates, CFWIJ Demands Journalists Release Immediately
Massive crackdown against the independent news website Tut.by follows more detentions. Four journalists, two of them women, were detained in Minsk on May 25 and released in the evening. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) is deeply concerned about the deteriorating state of press freedom and safety of journalists. We demand Belarusian authorities to release journalists who remain behind bars for more than a week and end the intimidation against Tut.by.

Etkin Haber Ajansı editörü İsminaz Temel ve muhabir Havva Cuştan’ın terör suçlamalarından yargılandığı davanın 12’inci duruşması bugün görüldü. Mahkeme heyeti eksik unsurların giderilmesine karar vererek bir sonraki duruşmayı 12 Ekim’e erteledi. Gazetecilikte Kadın Koalisyonu (CFWIJ) olarak sürekli ertelenen davaların, gazeteciler sindirme ve susturulma amacı taşıdığına inanıyoruz. Gazeteciler hakkında derhal beraat kararı verilmesini talep ediyoruz.
Turkey: CFWIJ Demands End to Constantly Deferred Cases
The 12th hearing of the trial against Etkin News Agency (ETHA) editor İsminaz Temel and reporter Havva Cuştan on terrorism charges was held today. The court ruled to complete the missing elements of the case file and postponed the hearing again. The next hearing will take place on October 12. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) finds the constant postponement aims to intimidate and silence the journalists. We demand İsminaz and Havva's acquittal immediately.
United States: CFWIJ Condemns The Discriminatory Decision Against Nikole Hannah-jones
Pulitzer Prize-winning writer and journalist for The New York Times magazine was discriminated against for a tenured position that she was offered at the University of North Carolina. U.N.C announced in April that Nikole Hannah-Jones was being appointed as the Knight Chair in Race and Investigative Journalism at Hussman school of Journalism and Media. She was supposed to formally join in July while continuing her writing for The Time magazine.
Bangladesh: CFWIJ Welcomes The Release Of Rozina Islam And Demands To Drop The Case Against Her
Rozina Islam, the award-winning investigative journalist, who was confined for five hours in the Ministry of Health office and later arrested by police, was released on bail on Sunday evening on May 23. She was freed from Kashmirpur jail after a magistrate court of Dhaka approved her bail until July 15 after undertaking a bond of 5000 Taka with two guarantors and confiscating Rozina’s passport.
India: CFWIJ Is Appalled By The Acquittal Of Rape Accused Tarun Tejpal, Stands In Solidarity With The Rape-survivor Woman Journalist
Rape accused journalist Tarun Tejpal was acquitted of rape and assault charges by the Indian court on May 21. Tarun was charged with rape and assault crime against a staff reporter during a conference in Goa in 2013. The trial was initiated in 2017 and Tarun Tejpal was booked with charges of sexual harassment, rape, and wrongful restraint.
France: CFWIJ Horrified At The Death Threats Towards Journalist Maty Fall
Journalist Maty Fall, who is originally from Senegal, was sent death threats online while she was covering the event in her home country. The sheer volume of violence threats and abuses that she received caught the attention of local journalist unions and other civil society groups who have extended her support and condemned the campaign against her. Maty has since filed a complaint with the police.
Bulgaria: CFWIJ Condemns Bulgaria’s Deputy Prime Minister Boyko Rashkov For Targeting Journalist Bilyana Gavazova
Bulgaria’s Deputy Prime Minister and Home Secretary Boyko Rashkov targeted journalists Bilyana Gavazova and her TV partner in the interview he participated in. In an interview he appeared on Bulgarian National Radio, Rashkov spoke about the dismissal of the journalists. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) denounces the vicious attack against Bilyana. We find this comment unacceptable and demand Rashkov a sincere apology to the journalists who were questioned about their profession.
United States: CFWIJ Condemns The Unlawful Arrest Of Ayano Nagaishi And Alison Cutler
May 20, 2021- Ayano Nagaishi and Alison Cutler, watchdog reporters associated with The News Leader were arrested on Wednesday, May 19. Both women journalists were wearing their press vests when they were arrested while covering a protest in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. The protest was held against the decision of a prosecutor for not convicting three sheriffs for shooting an unarmed black man, Andrew Brown Jr. last month. Ayano Nagaishi was live-tweeting her coverage from the protests. She was tweeting how police were arresting the protesters.
United States: CFWIJ Condemns Termination Of Emily Wilder Caused By The Cancel Culture
Former Arizona Republic writer Emily Wilder was terminated by The Associated Press following criticism regarding her being politically active. The journalist confirmed this news via a Tweet quoting the note issued by the News agency’s West News director, Peter Prengaman. The note stated that the news associate Emily is no longer with the AP and so the vacant position will be filled up as soon as possible.
Germany: CFWIJ Condemns The Violent Attack Against Journalists Katherin Grabener And Antonia Yamin
Katherin Grabener and Antonia Yamin associated with Kan News and RTL news network were attacked by demonstrators at a pro-Palestine protest in Berlin on May 15. The news team was recording the demonstration when the fireworks were thrown at them. As the journalist narrated something in Hebrew she was attacked. Protestors threw water bottles and pelted stones at the journalists. They also accused RTL news of propagating fake news and calling them out, to tell the truth. Thankfully the crew was unharmed in the violent attack. CFWIJ stands in solidarity with Antonia and Katherin and offers them our support. We believe that no journalist should be targeted while they are performing their job. We demand Berlin's law enforcement authorities to catch the perpetrators behind this heinous attack against women journalists.

Gazeteci Melis Alphan'a, 2015 Diyarbakır’da düzenlenen Newroz etkinliğinden sosyal medyada paylaştığı fotoğraf nedeniyle "örgüt propagandası yapmak" suçlamasıyla açılan davanın ikinci duruşması bugün İstanbul’da görüldü. Mahkeme, gazetecinin beraatına karar verdi. Gazetecilikte Kadın Koalisyonu (CFWIJ) olarak kararı memnuniyetle karşılıyoruz. Alphan’a yönelik açılan davada çıkan karar bir kez daha gazeteciliğin suç olmadığını ispatlar niteliktedir. Söz konusu davada verilen beraat kararının haksız gerekçeler gösterilerek yargılanan tüm gazetecilere emsal teşkil etmesini talep ediyoruz.
Turkey: CFWIJ Welcomes Journalist Melis Alphan’s Acquittal
The second hearing of the trial against journalist Melis Alphan on the charge of "spreading terrorist propaganda" was held today in Istanbul. The court acquitted the journalist from all the accusations. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ), welcomes the court order. The verdict yet again proves that journalism is not a crime. We demand acquittal for all journalists who were prosecuted on unfair grounds.
Palestine: CFWIJ Denounces The Attack On Journalist Rama Yousef By Israeli Police
Rama Yousef, a Palestinian journalist based in Jerusalem, was hit in the leg by a rubber bullet deployed by Israeli police on May 18. The journalist was reporting on the protest at Damascus Gate in Jerusalem when she was wounded. She received treatment for her injuries at a local hospital and instructed to rest at home for the next week.
