Belarus: CFWIJ Welcomes The Release Of Katsiaryna Barysevich After Six Months Of Unjustified Imprisonment
Staff correspondent for independent news website “Tut.by” Katsiaryna Barysevich was finally released from prison after completing her sentence period on May 19. She was arrested in November 2020 on the accusations of violating medical confidentiality in one of her articles. Katsiaryna has written the factual details behind the murder of a man named, Raman Bandarenka in her article. Raman was beaten by the unidentified people in Mink and later died in the hospital emergency room.
Palestine: CFWIJ Stands In Solidarity With Photojournalist Samar Abu Elouf Amidst Israeli Airstrikes.
Gaza-based photojournalist Samar Abu Elouf was forced to evacuate her family after an Israeli missile struck her neighbor’s home. Samar is just one example of the thousands of Palestinians displaced by the relentless Israeli air raids. Thankfully, the journalist and her family were able to escape the attack unscathed. Despite the destruction, Samar continues to document the ongoing conflict through her photographs. CFWIJ condemns the brutal bombardments in Gaza, and we stand in solidarity with Samar.

Turkey: CFWIJ Welcomes Lifted House Arrest Against Journalist Pinar Gayip
The house arrest against Pınar Gayıp, a reporter for the Etkin News Agency (ETHA), was lifted on May 18. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) welcomes the decision. We demand Turkish authorities to release and acquit all journalists who have been sued, under house arrest or imprisoned over their coverage. Journalism is not a crime.
The Philippines: CFWIJ Condemns The Restrictions Placed On Lorraine Ecarma
Correspondent for Rappler, Lorraine Ecarma was restricted by the police from covering the release of human rights activist and Lumad teacher Chad Booc. She was denied entry into the police station at the time of the release, and once let inside was neither allowed to film the event nor interview Booc.
South Africa: CFWIJ Condemns The Defamatory Online Attack On Journalist Qaanitah Hunter
Cape Town - Journalist Qaanitah Hunter was singled out in a Twitter attack by the ANC Women's League (ANCWL) president, Bathabile Dlamini. Dlamini attacked Hunter’s personal character, allegiance to the principles of feminism, and her professional integrity without any proof. Hunter’s employer company News24 has decided to take legal action in response to Dlamini’s allegations.

Turkey: CFWIJ Condemns Racist Attacks Against Journalist Karel Valansi
Karel Valansi, the columnist of Şalom Newspaper, was targeted with racist attacks by pro-govt media outlets after the Palestine conflicts. The journalist was also deliberately subjected to online smear campaigns after the racist articles. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) condemns these vicious attacks and stands in solidarity with Karel Valansi and all journalists. No journalist should be exposed to any discrimination.
Canada: CFWIJ Condemns The Restrictions Imposed By Rcmp Against Journalists Covering The Protests At Fairy Creek
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) temporarily restricted press access to the headwaters of Fairy Creek, the last unlogged old-growth valley on southern Vancouver Island. The press was present to cover the protests of The Rainforest Flying Squad, who have been protesting and successfully blocking logging of an old-growth forest in the region since last year. CFWIJ is alarmed by the RCMP’s restrictions on the press and we call on the authorities to allow journalists the necessary access to report on the events.
Iran: CFWIJ Is Horrified By The Physical Attack On Faeze Momeni
Faeze Momeni, a correspondent for Event 24 News, was covering her assignment at Shahid Beheshti University when she was attacked. The journalist was leaving the premises when she was attacked by guards of the university, resulting in a broken finger and hospitalization. CFWIJ highly condemns the brutal attack on Faeze and demands Iranian law enforcement hold the perpetrators accountable. The journalist was dutifully reporting on the management of COVID-19 from vaccination centers to keep the public freely informed. Faeze must be appreciated for her dedication and diligence rather than targeted by attacks.
Palestine: CFWIJ Is Appalled At The Violence Israeli Forces Are Enacting On The Journalists Covering The Crisis In The Region
On Monday, Israeli forces bombed and damaged the offices of "Filastiniat" association and its affiliated news agency "Nawa". Since no prior warning was given before the attack, it resulted in two civilian casualties including one child. In a separate incident today, Palestinian photojournalists Latifeh Abdellatif was physically assaulted by armed Israeli officers for covering their actions on ground.
Belarus: CFWIJ Condemns The Crackdown And House Raids Against TUT.BY And Editor Marina Zolotova
The offices of TUT.BY media and the house of its editor-in-chief Marina Zolotova were raided by the Belarusian state authorities under the guise of tax evasion. The media company's website was also blocked by the time of the raids. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) is deeply concerned about the deteriorating state of press freedom and condemns the crackdown against opposed news outlets in the country. We demand the Belarusian officials end these heinous practices aiming to intimidate journalists.
Canada: CFWIJ Condemns The Hate Speech Targeted Journalist Lauren Boothby
The Edmonton Journal reporter, Lauren Boothby, was targeted online over her coverage about vaccination of Covid_19. The reporter received abusive hate mail after her article on May 15. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) condemns the vicious hate speech targeted at Lauren. We demand Canadian authorities to identify the attacker and apply the necessary sanctions. Journalists are risking their health to report on the pandemic and deserve nothing but the utmost respect for it.
Bangladesh: CFWIJ Condemns The Unlawful Arrest Of Journalist Rozina Islam And Demands Her Immediate Release
Rozina Islam, a senior correspondent Prothom Alo newspaper, was arrested after spending almost five hours in confinement at the Health Ministry Secretariat. The journalist was accused of taking pictures of confidential documents while she was in the office of Saiful Islam, personal secretary (PS) to the Secretary of Health and Services division.
Belarus: CFWIJ Denounces The Constant And Arbitrary Detentions Against Journalists In Belarus
Reporter Lyubov Kasperovich was sentenced to 15 days of detention over a charge of participating unauthorised demonstration. The journalist was detained by police while covering the trial of a group of 12 young opposition supporters at the Oktyabrsky District Court in Minsk. After three days of detention, the judge ordered 15 days of arrest against Lyubov. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) is appalled by these arbitrary detentions against journalists. We demand Belarusian authorities end these unlawful practices towards journalists and Lyubov Kasperovich should be released immediately. Journalism is not a crime.
