The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) mourns the sudden loss of Rachel and offers sincere condolences to the journalist's family, friends and colleagues.
United States: CFWIJ Condemns The Police Brutality Faced By Student Journalists From The Ohio State University During The George Floyd Protests
Student journalists from The Ohio State University allege that they were pepper-sprayed by the Columbus police force while covering the George Floyd protests last year. No resolution was reached between the student group and the law enforcement agency since the incident took place. Students are still seeking justice for the violence they faced while doing their jobs while receiving silence from the authorities in charge.
Nigeria: CFWIJ Condemns The Abduction Of Journalist Amra Ahmed Diska
Journalist Amra Ahmed Diska was abducted from her home in Yola, the capital of Adamawa State. The journalist was kidnapped by a home raid early Tuesday. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) condemns the abduction of Amra. We demand the Nigerian authorities take action for the journalist's immediate release.
Russia: CFWIJ Welcomes The Dismissal Of The Case Against Tatyana Voltskaya By The Russian Court
Tatyana Volstkaya was finally acquitted of the baseless charges filed against her for spreading misinformation on May 4. The Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) correspondent was facing a criminal investigation for a story she published in April 2020. The journalist reported on the shortage of ventilators for COVID-19 patients in hospitals throughout Saint Petersburg, quoting an unnamed physician. After the article was published on the RFE/RL website, Russian media regulator Roskomnadzor asked the news outlet to take it down, but they refused to comply.
Portugal: CFWIJ Condemns The Racist Attack Against Journalist Conceição Queiroz
TVI correspondent Conceição Queiroz was intimidated and racially attacked by a passerby during her live broadcast for 24 Journal on May 3. The journalist was interviewing residents in the village of Resende on the first working day after a week-long lockdown. While Conceição was filming live, she was attacked by a bystander.
Georgia: CFWIJ Condemns The Vicious Attack Against Journalist Nino Kekelia And Her Team
The Mtavari channel TV crew, along with journalist Nino Kekelia were physically assaulted by an unidentified group of men, while reporting on the Davit Gareja Monastery Complex on Georgia's southeastern border with Azerbaijan. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) is utterly dismayed by the vicious attack. We demand the Georgian authorities identify the perpetrators immediately and apply the necessary criminal sanctions.
Russia: CFWIJ Condemns The Persistent Legal Harassment Against Lyudmila Savitskaya
Lyudmila Savitskaya is a correspondent for the north of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. Her appeal to revoke her controversial status as “foreign agent” media in Russia was denied by the city of Pskov on May 5. The court verdict stated that it was lawful to have her name on the Justice Ministry’s list. Savistskaya and four other members were added to the “foreign agent” media list in December 2020.
Cuba: CFWIJ Condemns The Detention Of Mary Karla Ares And Demands Her Immediate Release
Mary Karla Ares, a reporter for local newspaper Amanecer Habanero, was arrested by the Cuban Revolutionary Police on April 30 in Havana. The journalist was apprehended while live-streaming a demonstration on Facebook. The protest was held in support of Cuban artist Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara, who was on a thirst and hunger strike after his artwork was confiscated by the authorities.
Croatia: CFWIJ Condemns Croatian President Milanovic’s Verbal Attack Against Reporter Ivana Silovic
Croatian President Zoran Milanovic verbally attacked journalists working for the Croatian public broadcaster HRT. He accused reporters including Ivana Silovic of being ‘frauds’ and a ‘state disgrace’, ‘and ‘an embarrassment to the country. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) is utterly dismayed by the attacks of Milanovic. We find these attacks a direct threat against journalists to silence them.
Hong Kong: CFWIJ Condemns The Termination Of Nabela Qoser From Radio Television Hong Kong
Nabela Qoser, a correspondent associated with Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK), faces persecution in the workplace for her hard-hitting journalism. Reportedly, RTHK will not renew Nabela’s contract because of an ongoing probation period, forcing the journalist to quit by the end of the month. RTHK reopened the investigation against the journalist for her conduct at a government presser in July 2019.
Uganda: CFWIJ Is Appalled At The Attack On Pregnant Journalist Teddy Nakaliga
Wakiso District - Teddy Nakaliga and a fellow journalist were attacked by Ugandan armed forces for covering a protest in Kayunga Village. This assault was in clear violation of the agreement between the Chief of Defense Forces, Gen David Muhoozi, and the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB), following the events of February.

Habertürk TV presenter Ebru Baki was deliberately targeted with the organised trolling campaign after the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) Deputy İzzet Ulvi Yönter’s statement. Ebru was subjected to online attacks by many trolls. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) condemns MHP for targeting journalist Ebru Baki with baseless accusations and insults. We remind the Turkish authorities to end these vicious attacks against journalists, aiming to intimidate them.
Palestine: CFWIJ Is Horrified By The Physical Assault On Riwa Murshid
Riwa Murshid works for a famous Arabic news network, Raseef22. The journalist was on assignment to shoot at the coastal enclave’s border, adjacent to Israel, with other colleagues. The media crew was not new to the location and had permission to shoot in that area. But as the journalist was wrapping up the shoot, she and her colleagues were approached by two members of a militant-separatist organization.
KENYA: CFWIJ CONDEMNS THE ATTACK ON JOURNALIST MARIEL MÜLLER
DW East Africa correspondent Mariel Müller was injured while covering a protest in Nairobi when police authorities confronted the demonstrators. She was attacked by two tear gas canisters fired by the police, presumably to disperse the crowd. The incident, and the ensuing silence from Kenyan authorities, has resulted in widespread international condemnation.
