Turkey: CFWIJ Demands Journalist Sonya Bayik’s Acquittal Immediately

The second hearing of the trial against the Jiyan News managing editor Sonya Bayık was held today. She was detained for covering the protest held in Hasankeyf two years ago and released on charges of "violating the laws of marches". The next hearing was postponed to May 27, 2021. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) considers filing lawsuits against journalists constantly aims to silence the press. We demand Sonya's acquittal.

Yeni Yaşam Gazetesi editörü Hatice Şahin’e “silahlı örgüt üyeliği” suçlamasıyla açılan davanın ilk duruşması bugün Diyarbakır 9. Ağır Ceza Mahkemesi’nde görüldü. Mahkeme tüm tanıkların dinlenmesini talep etti. Gazeteci Şahin ve avukatına ise iddianamede belirtilen gizli tanıklara soracağı soruları hazırlayıp mahkemeye sunması için on gün verildi. Bir sonraki duruşma 24 Mart 2021 tarihinde görülecek. Gazetecilikte Kadın Koalisyonu olarak asılsız suçlamalarla gazeteci Şahin’e açılan davayı kınıyoruz. The first hearing of the trial against Yeni Yaşam Newspaper editor Hatice Şahin on charges of being affiliated with an armed organization was held today at the Diyarbakır 9th High Criminal Court. The court requested all witnesses be heard. Hatice and her lawyer were given ten days to present the questions to the court to be asked to the anonymous witnesses mentioned in the indictment. The next hearing will be held on March 24, 2021. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) condemns the lawsuit filed against the journalist. We demand the court to acquit the journalist immediately.

The journalist, who is not from the United States, chose to keep quiet as she feared backlash in her native country. Canada: CFWIJ Condemns The Verbal Harassment Of TV Reporter Krista Sharpe

CTV reporter Krista Sharpe posted a video of her experience with harassment on her Twitter account. In the recording, she is seen filming a broadcast in downtown Kitchener when a car drives past her, hurling vulgar insults. Sharpe was very disturbed by the uncalled for, hurtful insults. According to the police, they have started their investigation and are looking for the car seen in the footage. CFWIJ is dismayed by the public harassment Krista suffered. We offer her our full support and urge authorities to find the perpetrators and hold them accountable for their actions. No journalist should be intimidated nor harassed in such a manner.

United States: CFWIJ Condemns The Intimidation Of Journalist Patsy Widakuswara

VOA news correspondent Patsy Widakuswara was reassigned after her director stopped her from covering the White House. She questioned Mike Pompeo at an event held at the news agency’s headquarters. Patsy was reassigned to VOA Indonesian service after the director of VOA news shouted at her for raising questions to the Secretary of State, calling her out of order. In reaction to this retaliation of officials against the journalist, 26 reporters have called for resignations of VOA director Robert Reilly, and his deputy director Elizabeth Robbins. The Coalition For Women In Journalism condemns the news agency’s retaliation against Patsy Widakuswara. We believe that Patsy must be given the status and recognition she deserves.

India: CFWIJ Condemns The Physical And Verbal Abuse Towards A Female Journalist

A press conference was held at the Guwahati Press Club by film producer Umashankar Jha and actor Uttam Singh. Reportedly, when the journalist inquired a few questions about the film, she was verbally abused in front of everyone. Later on, when she and another photojournalist went to the duo to ask about their misbehaviour, they assaulted her. The journalist has filed a police complaint about the incident. Belarus: Minsk Journalists Raided, Harassed By Police; CFWIJ Spoke To Tatsiana Bublikawa After Her Return From Hospital

Journalist Tatsiana Bublikawa, a reporter at BelaPAN - an independent news agency in Belarus was mistreated by the police during a raid at her office in Minsk. The mishandling by the police can be qualified as violent, the trauma of which led Tatsiana to have a panic attack and she ended up in the hospital. However, she along with other journalists in Belarus who are seeking to disseminate information to the public are facing trouble at the hands of the government.
