Pakistan: Journalist Ailia Zehra And Naya Daur Media Targeted With An Online Smear Campaign By The Ruling Party Pakistan Tehreek-E-Insaf
Ailia Zehra, journalist and managing editor of the Naya Daur Media, was targeted with an online smear campaign initiated by the ruling party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and its followers. The campaign followed the airing of the interview of former Finance Minister Ishaq Dar with the BBC News and Naya Dour. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) believes these deliberate attacks are aimed to intimidate Ailia for her coverage. We call on the authorities to end their vicious attempts to intimidate the press. Journalists should be able to do their jobs in a free and fair environment. We reiterate that targeting and threatening members of the press is unacceptable.
Türkiye: IMC TV Program Koordinatörü Gazeteci Ayşegül Doğan'a 6 Yıl 3 Ay Hapis Cezası Verildi
İMC TV’nin program koordinatörü gazeteci Ayşegül Doğan’ın “silahlı terör örgütü kurmak veya yönetmek” iddiasıyla yargılandığı davanın sekizinci duruşması dün görüldü. Mahkeme heyeti Doğan’a altı yıl üç ay hapis cezası verdi. Gazetecilikte Kadın Koalisyonu (CFWIJ) mahkeme kararını kınıyor, Ayşegül Doğan’ın derhal beraatini talep ediyor.
Turkey: IMC TV Program Coordinator And Journalist Ayşegül Doğan Sentenced To Six Years In Prison
The eighth hearing of the trial against journalist Ayşegül Doğan, the program coordinator of İMC TV, was held yesterday. She has been charged with establishing or leading an armed terrorist organization and sentenced to six years in prison. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) denounces the court verdict and demands Ayşegül’s immediate acquittal. We reiterate that journalism is not a crime and journalists must not be persecuted for upholding press freedoms.
United States: CFWIJ Condemns The Physical Assault On Journalist Genevieve Reaume
KATU correspondent Genevieve Reaume was threatened and physically assaulted while covering a protest in north Portland. Masked demonstrators first blocked Genevieve and her colleague from filming, later destroying her phone. A protester even stepped on Genevieve’s hand as she tried to pick her device. CFWIJ condemns the assault on Genevieve, and we demand law enforcement authorities prioritize journalists' safety in such volatile situations.

Mezopotamya Kadın Gazeteciler Platformu (MKGP) üyesi ve gazeteci Kesire Önel, 26 Ekim'de Demokratik Toplum Kongresi (DTK) soruşturması kapsamında evine yapılan polis baskınıyla gözaltına alındı. Önel altı günlük sorgunun ardından adli kontrol şartıyla tahliye edildi. Gazetecilikte Kadın Koalisyonu (CFWIJ) gazetecinin serbest bırakılmasını memnuniyetle karşılıyor.
Turkey: Journalist Kesire Önel Released Conditionally After Six Days Of Detention
Mesopotamia Women Journalists Platform (MKGP) member and journalist Kesire Önel, whose house was raided, was arrested on October 26 as part of the Democratic Society Congress (DTK) investigation. After six days in detention, Kesire has been released conditionally. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) welcomes the journalist’s release and calls on the authorities to release all imprisoned journalists.
Croatia: Two Attackers Raided The Zadarski.hr’s Office And Threatened To Kill Journalists
Two unknown men raided the editorial office of Zadarski.hr in Zadar, during which one of the attackers threatened to kill journalists working for the news outlet. The assault was in retaliation to a news story aired about a wedding held in violation of Covid-19 regulations. The Coalition For Women In Journalism is deeply concerned about the journalist’s safety and demands authorities to implement strict consequences for the violent attacks against journalists.

Habertürk yazarı Nagehan Alçı hakkında açılan davanın ilk duruşması bugün görüldü. Dava, Alçı’nın duruşmaya katılmaması nedeniyle 11 Şubat 2021'e ertelendi. Bir sonraki duruşma için gazeteciden şikayetçi olan hakimin yargılamaya katılma talebinin, Alçı'nın savunması alındıktan sonra değerlendirilmesine karar verildi. The first hearing of the case against Habertürk columnist, Nagehan Alçı, was held yesterday. The case has been postponed to next year due to Nagehan's absence. The court decided that Judge Yalçınkaya's request for involvement should be evaluated after Nagehan's defence. The Coalition For Women In Journalism follows this case intently.

Kanun Hükmünde Kararname ile (KHK) kapatılan Özgür Gündem gazetesi editörü Reyhan Çapan ve gazete yazarlarının yargılandığı davanın 18. duruşması dün İstanbul 13. Ağır Ceza Mahkemesi'nde görüldü. Duruşma, her iki tarafın avukatlarının mazeret bildirmesi nedeniyle ileri bir tarihe ertelendi. Gazetecilikte Kadın Koalisyonu, gazetecileri susturmaya yönelik bu girişimleri kınıyor, Çapan ve diğer gazetecilerin beraatini talep ediyor.

18th hearing of the trial against former Özgür Gündem editor, Reyhan Çapan, and her colleagues was supposed to be held yesterday at the İstanbul 13th High Criminal Court. The hearing was postponed after the lawyers negotiated a later court date. The Coalition For Women In Journalism condemns these attempts to silence the journalists and demands the charges on Reyhan and all other journalists be dropped immediately.

Global News’ The Morning Show host, Supriya Dwivedi, resigned after being targeted by online racist threats. She claimed the outlet allowed false narratives about refugees, Muslims and other groups on air. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) condemns the station’s negligence. We call on Canadian authorities to ensure Supriya and her family’s safety.
Northern Ireland: The Ongoing Death Threats Against Journalist Patricia Devlin Have Taken A Severe Turn
The ongoing death threats against journalist Patricia Devlin have taken a severe turn. The two latest threats —including a death threat— were made by the Ulster Defence Association (UDA), a loyalist paramilitary group in Northern Ireland. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) follows the malicious attacks against Patricia with great concern. As these threats can carry severe consequences, we call again on the Northern Ireland authorities and security forces to ensure the journalist and her family’s safety.
