Journalist Alena Scharbinskaya has been hospitalized due to the brutal beatings she experienced while kept in a Belarussian detention center. Scharbinskaya was held for three days at the now-infamous detention center known among locals as “Akrestsin”. A group of leading Pakistani women journalists attended a meeting facilitated by the parliamentary committee on human rights to address vicious online attacks against women journalists on August 18. Aleksandr Lukashenko, who has ruled the country with an iron fist for 26 years, declared an early victory in the presidential elections held on August 9 in Belarus. The Election Commission, accused of acting in favor of Lukashenko, reported that the 65-year-old current president received 80.23 percent of the votes.

On August 10, 73 journalists signed a petition against Adam Haleem, an award-winning editor of Avas Online, who is accused of workplace sexual misconduct. The petition has been submitted to authorities. Adam was previously arrested in 2014, when he was caught on CCTV grabbing a female employee who fell on a flight of stairs before another employee intervened to stop the incident. But he was later released.
