Turkey: No Verdict In Özgür Gündem Case For The 21st Time

The trial against Özgür Gündem newspaper’s former managing editor Reyhan Çapan and four of its writers was adjourned without notice today. It was the 21st time that the court adjourned the trial. The next hearing will be held on February 23, 2022. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) stands by the journalists who have to defend themselves against baseless charges for their professional activities. We demand Turkish authorities acquit Reyhan from all charges. We reiterate that journalism is not a crime.

The trial against Özgür Gündem newspaper’s former editor, Reyhan Çapan was adjourned for the 20th time. Today the court ruled to eliminate the missing elements of the case file and postponed the next hearing to November 3, 2021. The Coalition For Women In Journalism condemns the attempts to intimidate journalists with the unjust trials that are constantly postponed. We demand the acquittal of Reyhan and other journalists immediately. Journalism is not a crime.

Turkey: CFWIJ Demands Journalist Reyhan Çapan’s Acquittal Immediately

19th hearing of the trial against former Özgür Gündem editor, Reyhan Çapan, and her colleagues were held today at the İstanbul 13th High Criminal Court. The hearing was postponed once again after the court ruled to wait for the execution of arrest warrants issued for defendants and ordered their initial testimonies to be taken. The trial was adjourned until June 22, 2021. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) considers constant postponement of the trials against journalists is a new method to intimidate them. We demand the charges on Reyhan and all other journalists be dismissed immediately.
