United States: CFWIJ Condemns Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene’s Non-Apology For Her Subsequent Attitude Towards The Press.

Location: United States, Washington
Date: February 6, 2021

A day after being stripped off of her congressional committee assignments, representative Greene addressed a press conference in which she refused to get into the specifics about her apology to Nancy Pelosi. She rudely deflected questions from CNN’s Jessica Dean, when pushed on the subject.

Greene, who is vocal about her far-right views, defensively responded to CNN’s Jessica Dean when questioned about her views on Nancy Pelosi. In a video from 2019, Greene had accused Speaker Pelosi of “treason” which is a crime “punishable by death”. Her recent expulsion from congress committees also resulted because of her attempts to incite the right-wing mob that had attacked the Capitol on January 6, 2021. Even though she issued a blanket apology, “for saying all the things that were wrong and offensive,” Greene refused to get into the specifics of it.

When pushed by CNN’s Jessica Dean on the contents of the video from 2019, Greene instantly became defensive, interrupting Dean’s questions, and demanding an apology from CNN for accusing former president Donald Trump of collusion with Russia.

The Coalition For Women In Journalism condemns Greene’s behaviour at the press conference. It is important that public representatives are cognizant of the impact their words can have, and in the aftermath of the Capitol attack do their best to bridge the divide between the two sides. CFWIJ hopes that the new administration would bring a better attitude towards the press.

The CFWIJ strongly condemns the police brutality against journalists. We demand the immediate return of the press cards seized from the security forces. Policies to intimidate journalists should be abandoned, and journalism should be practiced under the criteria of freedom of the press.
