The second hearing of the trial against Canan Kaya, the editor-in-chief for online news website Medya Koridoru, was held today. The court ruled to complete the missing documents in the case-fiel and adjourned the trial to April 1, 2021.
According to the news story by journalist Canan Kaya, Zeynep Tüzer was the security staff at Demirören Media Group. She was forced to resign just because of that she walked by her shoes on the floor that managers located. Since she didn’t resign, she was forced to take unpaid leave. When she went to the office to take her stuff, security guard didn’t take her in.
Canan told this story on her news coverage titled “Scandal in Demirören! A female employee was forced to resign for passing the management floor with shoes on”. It was published on the news website Medya Koridoru and other media companies in May 2020.
After the news story published, Demirören Media Group filed a lawsuit against Canan Kaya, the editor-in-chief for online news website Medya Koridoru, and five other media companies, TELE1 TV, İleri Haber, Ajans Press, Aykırı and Medya Koridoru.
The first hearing of her case was held on November 12, 2020. Demirören withdrew the charges against Aykırı News and Ajans Press. Both sides were given two weeks to report witnesses to be heard in court.
The second hearing of the case against Canan Kaya, and ofour company representatives were held today. The court ruled to complete missing documents in the case-file and adjourned the trial to April 1, 2021.
Canan Kaya spoke to CFWIJ right afte the first hearing and said ““To defile Demirören Media Group's brand reputation, there are such examples we can consider. 45 Hürriyet journalists lost their job without any explanation. Journalists were held in containers while reporting. Many people were unfairly dismissed. For example, Demirören News claimed their journalist, Felat Bozarslan, was not a war correspondent to avoid paying him proper severance. Considering this, if I had a deliberate intention, do you think I would need it? Demirören Media Group has sufficiently damaged its reputation with such injustices.”
CFWIJ is deeply concerned about the legal persecution of journalists by the government. These policies aims to silence journalists and prevent ensuring a safer environment. Arrested journalists shoukd be released and journalists who are persecuted legally should be acquitted immediately.
