Turkey: CFWIJ Demands Journalists Ebrar Başyiğit’s And Yağmur Kaya’s Release Immediately

Dokuz8Haber reporter Ebrar Başyiğit and Artı Gerçek correspondent Yağmur Kaya were detained while covering the detained Boğaziçi University students’ developments at İstanbul Çağlayan Courthouse. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) is devastated by police violence against journalists. We demand the immediate release of our colleagues. Journalism is not a crime.
Prof. Dr Student Melih Bulu's appointment as rector protests continues at Boğaziçi University. 24 students who were detained for carrying the LGBTI + flag in the protest, which took place yesterday, were brought to the Çağlayan Courthouse to be referred to the prosecutor's office today. The police intervened to Boğaziçi University students’ press release who gathered at the courthouse to support the students in custody. Following the intervention, Dokuz8Haber reporter Ebrar Başyiğit and Artı Gerçek reporter Yağmur Kaya were detained.
According to the Mesopotamia Agency (MA), the journalists were taken to Bayrampaşa State Hospital for a health check.
Artı Gerçek reporter Yağmur Kaya was battered and detained while covering the police attack, saying "You want to come too". In the video posted on Twitter, the assault against the journalist was recorded.
Police also intervened to Dokuz8Haber reporter Fatoş Erdoğan, who was filming the detentions of journalists. In the video, Fatoş was prevented from filming saying by police, "Getaway, the press is forbidden". The journalist was pushed from the scene.
Besides, reporter Ebrar Başyiğit, who followed the protest held in the university yesterday, was subjected to police violence during the news follow-up. Ebrar has also pushed away from the protest area while filming the intervention against the students.
