Turkey: CFWIJ Condemns The Brutal Threats Against Journalists Canan Kaya, We Stand With All Our Colleagues, #IstanbulConventionSavesLives

Journalist Canan Kaya was threatened after her social media post on the withdrawal of the Istanbul Convention. The Coalition For Women In Journalism condemns the vicious attack against Canan. We stand by all our female colleagues and reiterate once again; The Istanbul Convention saves lives!

Medya Koridor Editor-in-Chief, Canan Kaya, was threatened after posting on her Instagram account in response to the withdrawal of the Istanbul Convention, which was implemented to establish mechanisms to prevent violence against women, take legal measures and protecting victims of violence, with the President's decision. An unidentified internet user threatened the journalist with a voice message, after the post. The attacker, who told Canan to delete the post made in the audio recording, threatened the journalist by using the words "No to the Istanbul Convention".

The journalist, who documented the threat and took her Twitter account to share the threat. She said that she will file a criminal case with her lawyer on Monday, March 22, 2021.

The Coalition For Women In Journalism condemns this heinous attack on journalist Canan Kaya. We urge the Turkish authorities to take legal action against the threat and to identify the suspect. Turkey was the first country which signed the Istanbul Convention in 2011. Within this framework, we demand an immediate abandon to this decision. The Istanbul Convention is aiming to eliminate the elements of violence against women, to terminate the contract, and this is not just our female colleagues every woman's self-preservation. We call on Turkey to step back the decision of the withdrawal. The Istanbul Convention is for defending women’s rights. The Istanbul Convention saves lives!
