Pakistan: CFWIJ Condemns Indian Cricketer’s Comments Against Pakistani Journalist
Former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh got into what can only be described as a juvenile twitter spat with Pakistani fast bowler Mohammad Amir in the aftermath of the India vs. Pakistan fixture in the ongoing T20 World Cup. The two recalled moments from their rivalry arguing which side has historically fared better, when the conversation became extremely vile and loaded with personal attacks. Pakistani journalist Iqra Nasir, like many cricket fans from either side of the border, intervened to offer support to her cricket team and was abused by Singh as he attempted to counter her argument.
Serbia: CFWIJ Condemns The Verbal Assault Against Vanja Djuric
Vanja Djuric, a correspondent for the N1 TV network was verbally assaulted by a mob in central Belgrade on Saturday. The angry crowd was demonstrating a protest against the Belgrade Pride Parade. Vanja Djuric found herself surrounded by the members of the People's Patrol at the square below the Serbian government headquarters. The men assaulted her verbally and the cameraman, impeding them from continuing reporting. The angry protesters shouted at her to derail her coverage. The CFWIJ commends Vanja for standing up in face of harassment and not giving up her assignment.
Pakistan: CFWIJ Refutes The Information Minister’s Labeling of Journalists and Media Houses as ‘Agenda-Driven’
Federal Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry casually labeled prominent journalists and media houses in Pakistan as being “agenda-driven”. On September 1, he appeared on the News Eye program on Dawn News, where he was questioned on how the government has not completed its investigation of any of the three attacks that occurred in the capital.
Montenegro: CFWIJ Concerned About The Threats Received By Journalist Milka Tadic-Mijovic
Journalist Milka Tadić-Mijović was approached by former boxer Boško Filipović in a parking lot outside Petrovac supermarket. Filipović abused and threatened Milka for several minutes, during which time, the journalist was seriously concerned about her safety. He levelled accusations at her colleague and the nature of her work. The incident was taken up by state authorities and Filipović has been arrested since.
Canada: CFWIJ Condemns The Intimidation And Verbal Harassment Against Jo Horwood
Producer and correspondent for The Calgary News, Jo Horwood, was harassed publicly by an unknown intruder while she was recording an assignment. Jo shared a video of the incident captured by her cameraman. Towards the end of the video, the journalist approaches the harasser’s car, asking him to put down the car windows and show his face. CFWIJ is dismayed by the use of vulgar and inappropriate language towards a female journalist. We demand the local law enforcement hold this person accountable as these incidents become increasingly common.
Australia: CFWIJ Condemns The Perth Mayor’s Derogatory Remarks Towards Jenna Clarke
Broadcaster turned politician Basil Zempilas made reprehensible remarks towards his female co-host. While hosting the morning show, Mr. Zempilas referred to Jenna finding a seat on the floor at the attorney general's press conference earlier that week. The mayor commented that he saw Jenna Clarke before "in jeans and on your knees". The sexist remarks of Mr. Zempilas sparked controversy on Twitter. CFWIJ condemns the derogatory remarks made by the mayor, and we ask him to issue an apology.
United Kingdom: CFWIJ Condemns The Attempt To Smear Journalist Nadine White
Minister for Equalities, Kemi Badenoch, attempted to publicly rebuke journalist Nadine White for essentially doing her job. Nadine had approached her in January inquiring about her participation in the vaccine campaign of the United States. Badenoch published the correspondence on the social media campaign, resulting in abuse towards Nadine.
Russia: Elena Milashina Verbally Attacked By Chechen Head For Her Covid-19 Coverage
Russian journalist Elena Milashina has been verbally attacked by Ramzan Kadyrov, the head of Chechnya, during a live broadcast on Instagram on April 13. He resorted to personal attacks and threatened Elena for her “provocative” reporting on the state of Covid-19 in Chechnya. The Coalition For Women In Journalism denounces Kadyrov’s attempt to disregard Elena’s reporting at a time when the work of journalists around the world is most needed.
