Pulitzer-winning photojournalist Sanna Irshad Mattoo was stopped on the way to Paris, despite holding a valid visa from France.

Photojournalist Masrat Zahra alleged that the police assaulted her father in order to intimidate her. Currently, based in Germany, Masrat took to her Twitter account to post pictures of her injured father after the police denied allegations. Upon further questioning a member of the law enforcement agency even went on to say that they were unaware of Masrat’s connection with the family when they assaulted the man, otherwise their actions would have been more severe.

The worrying trend of harassment and intimidation of journalists continues in Indian-administered Kashmir. At least 18 reporters were interrogated by the police, and at least 12 have been assaulted.

The Coalition For Women In Journalism is thrilled with the news that the 2020 Peter Mackler Award for Courageous and Ethical Journalism was awarded to Masrat Zahra for telling the stories of Kashmiri women.

Freelance photojournalist Masrat Zahra has been booked under section 13 of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) by the Kashmiri police. She has been accused of allegedly “uploading anti-national posts with criminal intention to induce the youth and promote offence against public tranquillity.”
