Pelin Ünker is once again tackling legal attacks because of her incredible work for the Paradise Papers. She is under trial for “defamation and insult”. The fourth hearing of the lawsuits filed against her and Cumhuriyet newspaper took place in Istanbul yesterday. We demand that the charges against her be dropped immediately.

Burundi: Journalists Sentenced To Imprisonment – Hope Lost For Press Freedom
We denounce the court’s decision to imprison journalists Agnès Ndirubusa and Christine Kamikazi, along with their two other colleagues - Egide Harerimana and Terence Mpozenzi. They have been sentenced to two and a half years in prison and a fine of one million Burundian francs for “trying to undermine state security”.
USA: Washington Post Reinstates Felicia Sonmez — A Welcome Decision
The Coalition For Women In Journalism welcomes the Washington Post’s decision to reinstate their national politics reporter Felicia Sonmez. She was sent on administrative leave on January 27. The publication’s earlier decision received criticism within the industry, which eventually led them to reinstate Felicia.
Cuba: Journalist Iliana Hernández Threatened With Draconian Decree 370
Cuban journalist and activist Iliana Hernández has been charged with “receiving stolen property” and threatened with the oppressive Decree 370. The Coalition For Women In Journalism demands that Cuban authorities drop the charges against her. We also condemn the raid conducted on Iliana’s home, after which she was summoned at the police station on January 13. Our colleague should be allowed to report freely, without fear of being persecuted.
USA: Washington Post’s Action Against Reporter Felicia Sonmez Exposes The Negligence And Recklessness Women Journalist Are Treated With
The Coalition For Women In Journalism condemns the online harassment of Washington Post reporter Felicia Sonmez and the events that have ensued. Felicia received immense hate over her Kobe Bryant tweets that featured sexual harassment accusations against him. The tweet picked heat online very quickly leading to threats against Felicia. The reporter faced suspension and was sent on an administrative leave by the publication. In the meantime, the Post reviewed if the tweets related to Kobe Bryant violated their newsroom’s social media policy.

Turkish authorities have invalidated the press cards of hundreds of journalists who work for newspapers Evrensel and Birgün. We demand that the Turkish government act with more transparency regarding the cancellations and ensure that the process of obtaining press cards is non-partisan. They must provide a clarification to justify their action.
