United States: CFWIJ Supports Azmat Khan's Lawsuit Against Us State Offices

Attorneys for Reporters Committee for Freedom of Press (RCFP) have sued the Department of Defense, office of US Central Command and US Agency for International Aid (USAID) on behalf of journalist Azmat Khan, claiming violation of Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). Azmat sought records on civilian casualties in US wars in Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan and was not provided the documents.

Lebanon: Reporter Layal Saad Denied Entry to The Presidential Palace. CFWIJ Condems The Incident

Reporter for Al Jadeed TV, Layal Saad was denied entry to Baabda Presidential Palace. The reporter was on location to cover a cabinet meeting, however, was restricted from attending the session due to an incident that took place during a previous visit. Last month, Layal was abused by a security guard for not referring to President Aoun with his complete title. The security believed she had disrespected the president in the way she spoke about him to a colleague.

Gazeteci Durket Süren hakkında “örgüt üyeliği”, “örgüte bilerek ve isteyerek yardım” ve “örgüt propagandası yapmak” suçlamalarıyla açılan davanın yedinci duruşması Diyarbakır’da görüldü. Mahkeme geçen duruşmada olduğu gibi gazeteci Süren’in el konulan telefon ve bilgisayarına ait dijital inceleme sonucunun beklemesyekarar verdi. Bir sonraki duruşma 13 Aralık 2021’de görülecek. Gazetecilikte Kadın Koalisyonu (CFWIJ) olarak çeşitli gerekçelerle ertelenen davaların gazetecileri sindirme amacıyla yapıldığına inanıyoruz. Tekrar söylüyoruz, gazetecilik suç değildir. Turkey: Journalist Durket Süren's Trial Adjourned For The Seventh Time - CFWIJ Reiterates, Journalism Is Not A Crime

The seventh hearing of the trial against journalist Durket Süren was held in Diyarbakır. Today, the court ruled again to wait for the digital examination report on Durket’s confiscated materials. The trial adjourned until December 13, 2021. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) considers those postponed trials for various reasons to be aiming to intimidate journalists. We reiterate once again, journalism is not a crime. Journalist Durket Süren should be acquitted immediately.

Seven women journalists were deliberately prevented while following the Kobani Trial which took place in Ankara. The trial known as ‘Kobani’ was filed against 108 people, including Selahattin Demirtaş and Figen Yüksekdağ, the former co-chairs of the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP). The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) is concerned about the escalating crackdown against journalists. We urge the Turkish authorities to take into account the criteria of the free press and allow journalists to freely do their job.

Afghanistan: CFWIJ is Alarmed by The Forced Deportation Of Journalists By The U.S. Military

Journalist Stefanie Glinski and nine other journalists were detained by the United States Armed Forces at Kabul airport. They were intercepted before they could continue into the city. Despite the journalists wanting to stay in Kabul and arranging transport between the airport and the city, the U.S. forces deported the journalists. The marines allegedly pushed journalists onto an airplane that was meant for vulnerable Afghans looking to flee.

Afghanistan: CFWIJ Is Concerned For Shabnam Dawran And Khadija Amin After The Taliban Denied Them Entry To Work

Shabnam Dawran, a broadcaster at state-run news channel Radio Television Afghanistan (RTA), was denied entry to work. In a video message Shabnam shared with the private news network, TOLO News, she alleged the Taliban barred her from entering the news station and told her to “go home”. Shabnam was dressed in a hijab and presented her work ID, but was not allowed into the Kabul-based network. Another female presenter, Khadija Amin, was instructed to go home and wait when she tried to return to work on August 18.
