Croatia: CFWIJ Condemns The Brutal Attack Against Tea Paponja
24sata newspaper reporter Tea Paponja was physically assaulted in Marulic Square in Zagreb after the LGBTIQ+ Pride. The Coalition for Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) condemns the physical violence as well as this expression of hatred towards the LGBTIQ+ community. We demand Croatian officials apply criminal enforcement to the perpetrators. The journalists must do their job safely and freely.

Croatian President Zoran Milanovic verbally attacked journalists working for the Croatian public broadcaster HRT. He accused reporters including Ivana Silovic of being ‘frauds’ and a ‘state disgrace’, ‘and ‘an embarrassment to the country. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) is utterly dismayed by the attacks of Milanovic. We find these attacks a direct threat against journalists to silence them.

Journalist Maja Sever was given a dismissal warning by her employer organization when she spoke about the misogynistic culture prevalent in the firm during an interview. She took this decision following the repeated requests she had made with her organization to address the issue but realized they fell on deaf ears.
Croatia: Two Attackers Raided The Zadarski.hr’s Office And Threatened To Kill Journalists
Two unknown men raided the editorial office of Zadarski.hr in Zadar, during which one of the attackers threatened to kill journalists working for the news outlet. The assault was in retaliation to a news story aired about a wedding held in violation of Covid-19 regulations. The Coalition For Women In Journalism is deeply concerned about the journalist’s safety and demands authorities to implement strict consequences for the violent attacks against journalists.

The guest of Dnevnik N1 television on October 14 was the director of the Clinic for Infectious Diseases Alemka Markotić, who talked to reporter Matea Dominiković about the great growth of newly infected people in Croatia. However, just before appearing live on Dnevnik N1, N1 TV crew and professor Markotić were verbally attacked by a young couple.
