Bulgaria: CFWIJ Condemns The Violence Against Polina Paunova and Genka Shikerova At The Ruling Party Conference
Polina Paunova and Genka Shikerova, journalists for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty were physically attacked and verbally abused while covering a conference arranged by the ruling party, GERB. Masked men approached Polina when she tried to film them clashing with protestors present on location and physically assaulted her. The incident was caught on tape by her colleague Genka Shikerova, who claims that no one came to assist the two journalists.

Bulgaria’s Deputy Prime Minister and Home Secretary Boyko Rashkov targeted journalists Bilyana Gavazova and her TV partner in the interview he participated in. In an interview he appeared on Bulgarian National Radio, Rashkov spoke about the dismissal of the journalists. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) denounces the vicious attack against Bilyana. We find this comment unacceptable and demand Rashkov a sincere apology to the journalists who were questioned about their profession.
Bulgaria: CFWIJ Is Alarmed By Another Attack Against Journalist Desislava Panayotova
Desislava Panayotova is a journalist for the online news website DEN News. Unidentified men destroyed the glass screen of Desislava’s car, which was parked outside her residence, on Friday, March 12. The incident is the second of its kind. In December last year, Desislava’s car was shot at, leaving bullets in the windscreen. The attack seems to be a tactic to intimidate and threaten the journalist, as nothing was found missing from the car. CFWIJ condemns the dangerous and desperate attempts to discourage the journalist from doing her job. We demand law enforcement to investigate and apprehend the criminals behind the vandalism.
