Belarus: Crackdown On Press Freedom Continues With Regime Forces Detaining Up To Three Dozen Journalists

In the 20 days since the disputed presidential elections, Belarus has presented anything but ideal working conditions for journalists. Following the allegedly falsified election results which put “Europe’s last dictator” Alexander Lukashenko back to power, Belarus has begun to tighten its grip on journalists. Belarusian Association of Journalists documented over 100 cases of detention of journalists since August 9th. Detained journalists were kept in horrifying conditions, raising concern globally. The journalists were also beaten and some were deliberately targeted with rubber bullets.

Sweden: Amid Assassination Of Iraqi Journalists And Activists In Iraq, Woman Journalist Noor Alqaissi Is On The Verge Of Deportation By The Swedish Authorities.

Iraqi journalist Noor Maytham Shuhab known as “Noor Al-Qaissi’' s asylum application rejected in may 2029 by the Swedish supreme court because Iraq is no longer categorized as a dangerous country. CFWIJ urges the Swedish authorities to review Noor’s application and review its assessment of the situation in Iraq to comply with human rights and security reports and alerts.

Pakistan: The CFWIJ Calls For The Government To Immediately Ensure Safety For Women Journalists Facing An Intense Slew Of Threats Online.

Women journalists in Pakistan are campaigning against the online harassment they receive on a daily basis. However, the hate, abuse, trolling and threats have intensified in the aftermath of a joint statement and petition they shared over a week ago. Pakistan: The CFWIJ Endorses Resolution Moved By Lawmaker Sharmila Faruqui Demanding Safety Of Women Journalists At The Provincial Assembly.

Sharmila Faruqui, Member of the Provincial Assembly (MPA), winner of the most prestigious national award Sitara-e-Imtiaz, moved a resolution at the Sindh assembly against the online harassment faced by Pakistani women journalists on August 16. She demanded an inquiry into the issue and sought reinstatement of freedom of expression under Article 19 of Pakistan’s constitution. On Monday August 24, she will attempt to get the resolution passed by the Sind Assembly.
