Armenia: CFWIJ Condemns The Police Violence Against Journalist Ani Gevorgyan

Ani Gevorgyan, a correspondent for “Tert am” was covering an assignment at RA national security center. A scuffle outside the center resulted in forceful action from the police force. The journalist found herself in the middle of this and was hit by police. CFWIJ condemns the police action against Ani Gevorgyan whether intentional or not. We ask law enforcement in Yerevan to issue an apology and be more conscious of their actions in the future.
On June 17, Gevorgyan was assigned to report from the RA national security center. Gagik Tsarukyan, the party leader for “Prosperous Armenia” had his interrogation at the RA national security office. After interrogation, the party leader went on to meet his supporters gathered outside. At this moment tussle between the police and his supporters started resulting in the use of force from the police. Ani Gevorgyan present at the spot with other journalists was hit and injured as police surrounded them all.
The police which was supposed to provide protection surrounded the journalist instead and injured her. According to the journalists’ testimonies and statements issued by The Committee To Protect Freedom Of Expression, “ Regardless of whether these actions were targeted or were conditioned by negligence or insufficient professional training, we note that the security forces not only failed to protect the journalists but also hindered their work. We, the undersigned journalistic organizations, condemn any violence against media representatives who perform their professional duties, and demand from the RA Police to carry out an objective internal investigation to study the incident and bring those responsible to justice.”
The Coalition For Women In Journalism condemns the use of force against Ava Gevorgyan and other journalists and demands that the police department should conduct an immediate inquiry. We also ask law enforcement institutions to be more aware of their actions towards journalists in any volatile situation. Journalists should be protected by the police not harassed.
The CFWIJ strongly condemns the police brutality against journalists. We demand the immediate return of the press cards seized from the security forces. Policies to intimidate journalists should be abandoned, and journalism should be practiced under the criteria of freedom of the press.
