Turkey: Journalist Durket Süren's Trial Adjourned For The Seventh Time - CFWIJ Reiterates, Journalism Is Not A Crime
The seventh hearing of the trial against journalist Durket Süren was held in Diyarbakır. Today, the court ruled again to wait for the digital examination report on Durket’s confiscated materials. The trial adjourned until December 13, 2021. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) considers those postponed trials for various reasons to be aiming to intimidate journalists. We reiterate once again, journalism is not a crime. Journalist Durket Süren should be acquitted immediately
Bangladesh: The Coalition For Women In Journalism Calls On Bangladeshi Authorities To Drop Criminal Charges Against Journalist Rozina Islam
Rozina Islam, an award-winner Bangladeshi investigative journalist and a senior correspondent at Prothom Alo, was arrested after spending almost five hours in confinement at the Ministry of Health in Dhaka. Following her arrest, the journalist is facing charges of theft and espionage under the Official Secrets Act of 1923, a notorious law dating back to 1923, which prohibits access to confidential information. Her passport and mobile phone were confiscated during her arrest. Rozina lost her official accreditation to enter Bangladeshi ministries, resulting in her inability to exercise her journalistic profession after 17 years of work. If the journalist is convicted, she may face up to 14 years in prison.
Turkey: Another Police Violence Against Women Journalists - CFWIJ Demands An Immediate End to Repression
At least five women journalists were impeded by the police forces while following September 1 World Peace Day demonstration in İstanbul. The police attempted to confiscate journalist Eylem Nazlıer’s phone, who was filming the police violence against the demonstration. At least four female journalists’ right to report was violated. Early this morning, Jin News reporter Beritan Canözer’s house was raided and the journalist was taken to custody. No further information is given about the detention, reportedly. Turkey: CFWIJ Condemns The Indictment Launched Against Journalist Şehriban Abi and Nazan Sala
An indictment was filed against Jin News reporter Şehriban Abi, journalist Nazan Sala, and Mesopotamia Agency (MA) reporter Zeynep Durgut on terrorism-related charges. Both Şehriban and Nazan were apprehended by the authorities, where they remain behind bars. Zeynep, however, was listed in the indictment but has yet to be arrested. The Van 5th High Criminal Court accepted the case, and judicial proceedings are underway. The journalists, if convicted, face a sentence of up to 15 years in prison. The Coalition For Women In Journalism condemns the unfounded charges against journalists, and we demand their immediate release.

State officials cracked down on civilians and journalists for organizing a protest rally against President Alexander Lukashenko. Of those arrested, at least five are journalists, most of them women. Turkey: CFWIJ Condemns Journalist Perihan Kaya’s Prison Sentence And Demands Her Immediate Acquittal
The first hearing of the trial against journalist Perihan Kaya on terrorism charges was held in Diyarbakır. The court sentenced the journalist to one year and three months in prison for "spreading terrorist propaganda". The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) condemns the unjust charges given by the judiciary to silence the journalists. We demand Perihan’s acquittal immediately.
