Sophie Cousins is a freelance journalist and a CFWIJ fellow. She usually reports on developments in South Asia and the Middle East, but has been in Australia during the coronavirus outbreak. For the past eight years of living and working abroad, she describes coming back to Australia- her home country - as a “whirlwind”. Sophie has recently received a grant from the National Geographic Society to report on how Indigenous communities across the country are protecting themselves against Covid-19.

Nadia Todres is a documentary photographer based in Haiti. She has been documenting the coronavirus outbreak and has also been working on a personal project featuring portraits of Haitians amidst Covid-19. Nadia work is usually focused on adolescent girls in Haiti for the most part, but she also covers disasters, events, and everything happening in the country for whichever NGO or organization she is shooting.

Sumy Sadurni is a freelance photojournalist based in Kampala, Uganda. She is currently documenting the Covid-19 pandemic in the country. Sumy usually reports on politics, society, gender and human rights and environment, but also works on long-term personal projects that look at different types of society and relationships. Currently Sumy is also reporting on the effects of the lockdown in the city to stop the spread of coronavirus, and shares her reporting experience with CFWIJ.

Prachee Kulkarni is a journalist based in Pune, Maharashtra. She works for Pune Mirror as its principal correspondent and has been covering the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic for the paper.

Aliya Hall is a journalist based in Eugene, Oregon. She has been documenting Covid-19 for a Crewell-based paper The Chronicle and normally covers the Southern Willamette Valley, education beats, as well as features, business and city council news in the city of Springfield. In this profile for CFWIJ, she shared about covering the pandemic all along.

Lisette is a Nicaraguan-born photojournalist who currently resides in Bonita Springs, Florida. She works on stories highlighting women and since the past year, she has been focusing on a personal photo series titled “The Road to Immokalee”. The series records visual stories of the women that live and work in this farm working community. Lisette has been documenting the Covid-19 pandemic from Florida.

Elettra Fuimi is a journalist and documentary filmmaker based in Lugano, Switzerland. She is also the founder of Fiumi Studios - a full-service production and online content strategy company. Elettra has been monitoring the Covid-19 outbreak in Italy - her home country, which became one of hardest hit countries in the world.

Flor Castañeda is a freelance photojournalist based in Zacatecas, Mexico. She has been covering Covid-19 through her lens but describes her experience as strange but challenging, above all. The situation around the global pandemic has made Flor rethink her way of working, the way she approaches people and portrays, and look for new stories that reflect the present conditions without falling into repetition.

Amna Ali Alpiyal is a freelance journalist based in Islamabad, Pakistan. She has been covering Covid-19 focusing on the various aspects of the pandemic with an aim to inform the community.

Ana Gonzalez has been covering the pandemic from the United Kingdom. She had originally been working on documentaries for the BBC and other organizations out of Saudi Arabia. But when the pandemic began to intensify in the US and Europe, she chose to cut her trip short and return to London. She did so just in the nick of time as Saudi Arabia closed its own borders to fight the coronavirus.

Syria-based journalist Zeina Shahla is covering COVID-19 from Damascus while in self-quarantine. She has been working as a freelance journalist for the last three years with a focus on social and humanitarian issues. Zeina is currently reporting for Raseef22 and BBC Arabic. She recently reported about the impact of the coronavirus on those with hearing impairment. We spoke with Zeina for an in-depth view of how she has been covering the pandemic in Syria, particularly since the country has been facing numerous challenges on various fronts.

Suraksha Pinnu is an Indian journalist based in Bengaluru. She is associated with English daily newspaper Deccan Herald. Suraksha has been following the COVID-19 story for the paper with updates and news from Karnataka - a state in southwest India. Suraksha shared that her stories on the subject had been challenging, and specifically spoke of the lack of information coming from the government.

Kofoworola Belo-Osagie is based in Lagos, Nigeria, and works as the chief correspondent and head of the education desk at an English daily called The Nation. She covers the impact of the coronavirus on education and wrote about the feasibility of e-learning following the possible closure of schools in Nigeria mid March.

Agnieszka Pikulicka-Wilczewska is an Uzbekistan-based journalist currently reporting from Afghanistan. She has been covering COVID-19 in the country for the past week with a focus on the situation of coronavirus and its spread across the country. We got in touch with Agnieszka and asked her about the state of the global pandemic in Afghanistan and how she has been covering it so far.

Carolyn Bick is a Seattle-based freelance journalist who primarily works for the South Seattle Emerald - a small, local, nonprofit publication that specifically covers South Seattle and vulnerable communities. Her work has previously appeared in several local and international publications. Her coverage of the coronavirus ranges from the impact of COVID-19 on orthodox jews to hurdles of online learning for autistic students and their parents. Carolyn has been reporting on the pandemic in a city - Seattle - that was initially hit really hard in the US.

Fabeha Monir is a Dhaka-based visual journalist. She has been documenting the coronavirus outbreak in Bangladesh. Her recent reportage on the global pandemic for Bistandsaktuelt was focused on one of the world’s largest refugee camps based in Cox Bazar with more than a million Rohingya refugees living in vulnerable conditions. We spoke with Fabeha following her coverage and here’s how she shares her experience of reporting COVID-19 in Bangladesh.

Dr Taneer Ahmed is a Karachi-based health reporter for Samaa Digital. Ever since COVID-19 cases have surfaced in Pakistan, she has been keeping a close watch on the pandemic. We asked Taneer how she ensures the coverage of coronavirus to be factually correct in the midst of surplus information and misinformation circulating left, right and centre.

Emily Feng is a Beijing-based international correspondent for the National Public Radio (NPR) - an American media organization. We asked Emily how she has been keeping up as a journalist in the midst of COVID-19.

Wudan Yan is a Seattle-based journalist and has been covering the COVID-19 pandemic for different publications. She tells us that this is the fastest moving disaster she has ever covered. Her other work has involved reporting on environmental damage from palm oil and the Rohingya refugee crisis.

The spread of Covid-19, a new frontline for journalists.

The Coronavirus has infected close to 340,000 people and caused more than 14,700 deaths. The global scale of this pandemic has forced countries around the world to take serious measures, including closing borders and imposing quarantines. This has increased multidimensional challenges to the journalists who are reporting on this story, from all across the world. In addition to tackling the very mechanical side of reporting stories connected to Covid-19; from impact on human life, to overwhelming medical systems around the world to how this pandemic is challenging countries to offer better governance, journalists are yet again on the frontline. Whether they report in quarantine, from behind a desk or from the street covering life at large, the risk of safety for these reporters demands a vigorously thoughtful approach.
