Our Philosophy

The Coalition For Women In Journalism — #CFWIJ

Women journalists have changed the industry.

Today, with more women reporting and writing the news, audiences and readerships have greater access to stories. As a result, more diverse and dynamic coverage of the world is possible.

For over a century, women journalists have worked without an ecosystem of support in which they are encouraged to fulfil their potentials. That is the core reason why we think so many women struggle to stay afloat in this career.

The Coalition For Women In Journalism fosters and supports camaraderie between women journalists around the globe. We were the first to pioneer a worldwide support network for women journalists. Through our mentorship program and advocation for a safe and flourishing professional environment, we are creating spaces for women journalists where they can be nurtured, stay safe, and expand their skills. We work with no national or ethnic boundaries, and offer support to women from all backgrounds.

We are born out of the industry’s need for community, equality and mentorship.

This idea was conceived in January 2016, over coffee, by women of different generations. Established in March 2017, the Coalition became the first nonprofit to offer mentorship to women journalists from both Western and non-Western countries. We are independent, impartial and dedicated to a single, vital interest: the wellbeing of our colleagues. We work with partners worldwide who share our values and goals, helping us advance our message and continue our efforts. The Coalition strives in all its work to promote a culture of stewardship in the public interest of good journalism. Empathy and responsibility is at the heart of everything we do.

“The most remarkable lesson I learnt from challenges in my career, was not that I had them, but that I could overcome them.”

— Kiran Nazish, Founding Director at the CFWIJ
