Standing in Solidarity with Women Journalists Facing Violence on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

“The essence of free expression is to ensure that women journalists can work safely. Without it, women may be forced to work in a more subdued manner” Diane Kablakan, Côte d’Ivoire

Today, on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, we at the Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) stand in solidarity with women journalists who face unprecedented dangers in their line of duty. The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, commencing today, echoes our resolve to fight against the violence that threatens the very foundation of press freedom.

In 2023, the landscape of threats and violence against women in journalism has intensified alarmingly. Our latest data, capturing incidents until November 15, paints a harrowing picture: a 26% increase in total violations, with 11 murders, and significant rises in physical assaults and legal harassment. This stark reality underscores the urgent need for collective action and heightened awareness.

One of the most troubling developments this year is the escalation of violence in conflict zones, notably in Palestine and Ukraine. These regions have become perilous battlegrounds for journalists, particularly women, who persist in their mission to report the truth under dire circumstances.

We have documented at least 54 journalists becoming casualties in the conflict, including 9 women. Salam Mema, Salma Mukhaimer, and Duaa Sharaf are among those who have paid the ultimate price. Their deaths are a grim testament to the escalating dangers faced by journalists in conflict zones.

The threats extend beyond the battlefield, encompassing harassment, unwarranted detentions, and impediments to reporting.

As Corinne Vella says, reflecting on her sister Daphne Caruana Galizia's murder, “Women journalists are often targeted merely because of their gender.” It is a stark reminder of the gendered nature of these threats and the necessity of a gender-responsive approach in addressing them.

On this International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, we call on the global community, government to rally behind these courageous women. We must protect their right to report freely and safely, ensuring that their voices, vital to our understanding of the world, are not silenced.

CFWIJ remains committed to documenting these violations, advocating for women's safety in journalism, and holding perpetrators accountable. Together, let us UNiTE in activism to end violence against women and girls and safeguard the freedom of the press for generations to come.
