Gaza: Reporting Under Fire
Journalists covering the Israeli-Hamas war bear witness to stories of tragedy, despair, and resilience. CFWIJ and Women Press Freedom is following the work of journalists, especially women on the frontlines amidst the relentless torrents of war and civil unrest, risking their lives to shed light on the truth.
Since October 7, 2023, at least 141 journalists have been confirmed killed, 27 were women. 49 journalists were reported injured, 2 journalists were reported missing, 74 journalists were reported arrested.
CFWIJ and Women Press Freedom have been closely monitoring the situation in the region and making concerted efforts to provide assistance to journalists.

Section 2: Press Under Attack: Murdered and Injured
Since October 7, 2023, at least 128 journalists have been confirmed killed, 23 were women. 35 journalists were reported injured, 2 journalists were reported missing, 69 journalists were reported arrested.

Salam Mema
Killed
Israeli airstrike on the Jabalia refugee camp, north of Gaza, struck the home of journalist Salam Mema and family on October 9, 2023. Mema was trapped under rubble for four days before rescue workers could reach the lifeless body of the journalist. Her death was confirmed on October 13, 2023.
Ayelet Arnin
Killed
Hamas killed 22-year-old news editor Ayelet Arnin during the Supernova music festival massacre in south Israel on October 7, 2023. Approximately 260 people are confirmed dead. Arnin was a sub-editor for the evening news edition at public broadcaster Kan 11.
Shai Regev
Killed
Shai Regev, an entertainment reporter, was killed by Hamas during the Supernova music festival massacre on October 7, 2023. Regev, known for her work at TMI, was confirmed dead on October 14, 2023, after a week of anguish for her loved ones.
Duaa Sharaf
Killed
On October 26, 2023, Israeli airstrikes targeted the Al-Zawaida area in central Gaza, killing Palestinian journalist Duaa Sharaf and her young daughter. Her death was confirmed by Al-Aqsa Radio, which is operated by Hamas, where Duaa Sharaf worked as a radio presenter.
Salma Mukhaimer
Killed
Freelance journalist Salma Mukhaimer was killed alongside her child in an Israeli bombardment on Rafah on October 25, 2023.
Alaa Taher Al Hassanat
Killed
Seasoned reporter and presenter at AlMajedat Media Network, Alaa Taher Al Hassanat was killed along with multiple family members when an airstrike hit her home in Gaza City's Al-Daraj neighborhood on November 20, 2023.
Ayat Khadoura

Following Israeli bombing of her home in Beit Lahia, northern Gaza on November 20, 2023 freelance journalist Ayat Khadoura died. In a haunting video posted shortly before her death, Al-Khadour expressed her fear for her life amid the constant bombing.
Farah Omar
Killed
On November 21, 2023 Al-Mayadeen reporter Farah Omar and her colleague were fatally struck by a missile shortly after concluding a live broadcast from Tayr Harfa in southern Lebanon. Al Mayadeen has blamed Israel for deliberately targeting its journalists, alleging that the strike involved two rockets fired by an Israeli warplane.
Amal Zohd
Killed
Amal Zohd, who collaborated with Al-Jazeera and Al Mayadeen, and her family were killed in the early hours of November 24, 2023, in an Israeli air attack on their home in Gaza City.
Shima El-Gazzar

On December 3, 2023 journalist Shima El-Gazzar, who worked for Al-Majedat media network, was killed in an Israeli airstrike on her residence in Rafah city.
Ola Atallah
Killed
On December 9, Palestinian journalist Ola Atallah was killed by an Israeli airstrike on a relative's house in the Ed-Derc district, east of Gaza City. Local sources report that several members of Atallah's family also perished in the same attack. Atallah, who had previously served as a correspondent for Anadolu Agency (AA), had worked for various local and international media organizations throughout her career.
Dua al-Cebbur
Killed
Journalist Dua al-Cebbur, along with her husband and children, were killed on December 9, by an Israeli airstrike on Khan Younis, as reported by the Palestinian Union of Journalists. Cebbur was working with the local Media Eye Network.
Nermin Qawwas

On December 13, 2023, Nermin Qawwas, who worked with Russia Today, was killed in an Israeli airstrike on her home. According to reports by the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate, Qawwas lost her life when a bomb struck her home.
Hanan Ayyad

Digital creator Hanan Ayyad was killed on December 13, 2023. According to witnesses, Ayyad, her husband, and two children were killed by an Israeli shell that hit the area of the Old City of Gaza.
Haneen Ali al-Qutshan

Palestinian journalist Haneen Ali al-Qutshan was tragically killed on Sunday, December 17, 2023, during an Israeli air strike on the Nuseirat refugee camp. Additionally, an unknown number of her family members also perished in the attack.

Journalist Hiba al-Abadla and her daughter Judy were killed by an Israeli airstrike on their home in Khan Younis on January 9, 2024.
Alaa Hassan Al-Hams

During the ongoing Israeli assault on the Gaza Strip, Palestinian journalist Alaa Hassan Al-Hams was tragically killed by an airstrike on February 12, 2024. Al-Hams was employed by the local Sanad News Agency in Rafah.

Ola Al Dahdouh

On May 31, 2024, Ola Al Dahdouh, a Palestinian journalist employed as an editor and presenter at the local Sawt Al Watan radio station, was killed in an Israeli airstrike targeting her husband's family residence in Gaza City's Al Jalaa neighborhood. Reports from SKeyes, WAFA, and the Palestinian Journalists' Syndicate confirm her untimely demise in the strike, which, as stated by her brother Mohannad on Facebook, occurred suddenly and without prior warning. The airstrike also resulted in injuries to Al Dahdouh's husband and their one-and-a-half-year-old son.

On September 30, 2024, an Israeli airstrike in central Gaza claimed the lives of journalist Wafa Aludaini, her husband, and their two children in Deir Al-Balah.
Nadia Al-Sayed, Haneen Baroud
Killed
On October 27, 2024, Nadia Al-Sayed, Haneen Baroud, and their colleagues Saed Radwan, Abdulrahman Al-Tanani, and Hamza Abu Salmiya were killed by Israeli airstrikes in Gaza.
Zahra Abu Sakheil

On November 9, 2024, four Palestinian journalists were killed in Israeli airstrikes in Gaza. Among the victims were Zahra Abu Sakheil and her brother Ahmad, who were killed alongside their father, Mohammed, when Israeli forces bombed the Fahd al Sabah school in Gaza City. The school had been sheltering evacuees at the time. The attack also killed two other journalists, Mustafa and Abdul Rahman Khader Bar, in separate incidents in Gaza City.

Covering the back-and-forth shelling near Alma Al-Shaab, AFP’s journalist Christina Assi is critically injured by Israeli airstrikes. The targeted attack kills Reuter’s videographer Issam Abdallah and injures six other journalists, all clearly identifiable as press.

Israeli missiles strike news crews near Alma al-Shaab, Lebanon, injuring Al Jazeera’s Carmen Joukhadar. Car of Al Jazeera’s crew set ablaze. The strike on October 13 killed Issam Abdallah of Reuters and injured six more journalists representing various media organizations.

On July 6, 2024, a tragic escalation of violence implicated Israel in the killings of five Palestinian journalists in the Gaza Strip within a mere 24-hour period. One of the journalists killed was Wafa Abu Dabaan, a reporter linked to the Islamic University Radio in Gaza.

Reporter’s Without Border’s correspondent in Gaza, Ola Al Zaanoon, was hospitalized with a leg injury following an Israeli bombardment in south Gaza. She was injured after evacuating her home in Gaza City to Khan Younis.
Salma al-Qadoumi

On Sunday, August 18, 2024, Palestinian journalist Salma al-Qadoumi was shot in the back by Israeli tanks while reporting on the Israeli army's escalation of its ground offensive in Khan Younis, Gaza. Video following her shooting shows the journalist being placed on a stretcher while unconscious. Her current condition remains unknown.
