United States: New Assassination Plot Against Iranian-American Journalist Masih Alinejad Exposed Amid Ongoing Threats

November 10, 2024 - United States, Connecticut, Fairfield

Mere weeks after sharing her harrowing experiences of being targeted at Women Press Freedom's Transnational Repression Roundtable in Ottawa, Canada, the disturbing details of yet another plot against Iranian-American journalist Masih Alinejad have come to light. Two men have been arrested for allegedly planning her assassination at a February event at Fairfield University. These men reportedly conducted surveillance on Alinejad's Brooklyn home and relayed information to an Iranian operative, underscoring the lengths to which the Iranian government will go to silence her.

Alinejad, a vocal advocate for women’s rights in Iran, spoke openly at the roundtable—just a day after the FBI charged an IRGC official in a 2021 assassination attempt against her.

These attempts on Alinejad's life are more than attacks on a single person; they are assaults on freedom of expression. We stand with Alinejad and call on the international community to act swiftly to protect journalists being targeted abroad.
