United Kingdom: Aggressive Interruption Forces Anna Youssef to Abandon Interview on Public Safety for Women

December 3, 2024 - United Kingdom

On December 3, 2024, ITV Granada Reports journalist Anna Youssef was interrupted during an interview with Gill Jones and her daughter Beth Fletcher, who were discussing women’s safety in public spaces. A man, who appeared uninvited and became verbally aggressive, forced the group to abandon the interview. They later completed the report indoors. The disruption was a direct reflection of the very issue the women and journalist were addressing.

This aggressive confrontation highlights the dangers women face when speaking out about harassment and violence. It shows the critical need for safe spaces for women in public and media platforms.

Journalists must be able to conduct interviews without fear of intimidation or violence. Women Press Freedom denounces this attack on the journalist and her interviewees. We will continue to speak out against gendered attacks on press workers and support reporting that reveals harassment. Authorities must ensure the protection of those raising their voices for justice and the journalists shining a light on their stories.
