Russia: Maria Menshikova Sentenced to 7 Years in Absentia for Supporting Political Prisoners

September 30, 2024 - Russia, Moscow

An accelerated increase in transnational repression continues as Maria Menshikova, former editor of independent outlet DOXA, is sentenced in absentia to 7 years in prison for "justifying terrorism" in Moscow court. Baseless conviction stems from two VK posts expressing support for political prisoners.

Now living in exile, Maria also faces a 4-year ban on managing websites.

This ludicrous sentencing is latest example of Russian trials in absentia targeting critical journalists in exile.

Women Press Freedom condemns this sham court case and calls for this unjust conviction to be overturned.
