Georgia: Police Attack Journalists Covering Protests, Targeting Women Reporters

November 29, 2024 - Georgia, Tbilisi

In Georgia, journalism is under siege. Police violently attacked over 20 journalists covering protests against government repression, including 9 women who were specifically targeted. Mariam Nikuradze’s phone was smashed twice, her camera destroyed, and she was tear-gassed. Natia Amiranashvili was assaulted mid-reporting. Anna Mdivani, Nata Kajaya, Nino Lorchoshvili, and Dea Mamiseishvili faced brutal obstruction and violence.

This is not an accident—it’s a calculated attempt to silence dissent, intimidate the press, and suppress coverage of authoritarian abuses. Women journalists are bearing the brunt of these attacks, with their voices and tools of truth systematically destroyed.

Women Press Freedom demands immediate accountability from Georgian authorities. These assaults on the press are assaults on democracy itself. The world must stand with Georgian journalists now—before it’s too late.
