Ecuador: WPF Demands Authorities Act on Digital Threats Targeting Gisella Bayona

January 21, 2025 - Ecuador, Quito

Gisella Bayona is facing identity theft—imposters solicit money & contacts in her name. Bayona reported the case to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, but no action has been taken despite the National Police Intelligence Department identifying those responsible.

This case exposes rising digital threats against journalists. Our data shows women journalists face disproportionate online harassment, often escalating into real-world dangers. Journalists must be able to work without fear of cyberattacks, impersonation, or intimidation

Women Press Freedom denounces the inaction of Ecuadorian authorities and demand immediate measures to hold those responsible accountable. We stand in solidarity with Bayona and urge authorities to prioritize journalist safety and combat digital attacks.
