Australia: Channel Nine's Airlie Walsh Sues for Sex Discrimination Amid Harassment Claims at Network

December 3, 2024 - Australia, Canberra

Channel Nine reporter Airlie Walsh has filed a sex discrimination lawsuit against her employer, Channel Nine, while on maternity leave.

This follows a cultural review that revealed widespread harassment within the network. Women journalists reported enduring a toxic "boys’ club" culture, grooming, and sexualized comments, while being excluded from “serious” stories. Alarmingly, 62% of staff in the Broadcast Division reported abuse of power, and 57% experienced harassment or discrimination.

Women Press Freedom denounces this systemic misogyny and demands accountability from Channel Nine. Naming perpetrators and implementing concrete reforms is vital.

We stand in solidarity with Walsh and all survivors fighting for justice. Media organizations must protect, not harm, their journalists.
